Is that an unpopular opinion among fans?

I based its lack of popularity off of it being rated the second lowest album by them on metal-archives at about 67% average rating iirc. Actually looking at the reviews it seems like a love it or hate it album with only one or two middling reviews, so about half seem to love it, so maybe I'm wrong in saying the opinion is unpopular, because it's only brought down so low because a handful of people gave it below 30% scores.

Do you figure it's mostly black metal traditionalists who dislike that record?

I read some of the negative reviews and they seemed more balanced than you would expect traditionalists to be. They tended to show appreciation for TWWTG, but found MoRT a little too aimless or "one-dimensional." I would disagree on both of those claims, but I can see how others could find MoRT that way. I would just agree to disagree with them.

One of the songs was originally written by Howerdell in collaboration with Chester Bennington, intended - but not used for - the last Linkin Park album before Bennington died. Then Howerdell and Maynard finished the song for the new APC album. Basically, the album sounded worrying enough on paper. Then I heard the result and... blah. I'm not even a fan, but Mer De Noms was a solid record. |
