For some reason Deftones is the only nu metal band that gets any kind of pass from the heads when they're basically Slipknot with a singer who's out of breath.

Lots of Slipknot is more legit metal than nu metal, I'd say. Deftones never sound much like traditional metal of any kind.
Plus Deftones have a pretty clear focus on atmosphere, especially on their better albums. Playing heavy grooves is only part of what makes Deftones the band it is, while it pretty much defines Slipknot as far as I know.
I don't like Slipknot, but I don't hate the band either. They are good at what they do, but just kind of boring to me.

I always felt like Deftones were the muzak of Nu Metal. A bit boring.

I love slipknot. Especially their first album. It's just loud and angry. A zero shits given type of album.
