I blame it all on The Last Waltz, then it got worse with We Are The World. I'm talking about the studio and concert get-togethers where you can almost hear the stage groaning under the weight of celebrity musicians - but the music they produce is often mediocre. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I usually find those star-studded sing-alongs very disappointing.

Those celebrity sing-alongs are always a dull bore-fest.

Too many cooks spoiling the sonic stew.

I'm glad to see that you agree, Psy-Fi, and you are quite right: there' s a proverb for what happens.

I suppose that no artist has the time or ego to stand out and do what they are best at. The world's greatest guitarist only has time for a few notes; the improvisational rapper might squeeze in a couple of words at best, so it turns into dull lowest-common-denominator music despite all the star names. In those circumstances, I imagine that even Frownland would be reduced to linking arms and chanting along with the rest of them. I'm not sure what GG Allen might do - I'd just make sure I wasn't standing next to him on the stage.

If you saved up 15 years of material for the debut, makes sense.

Eight Miles High is one of my favourite Byrds tracks, but more for the wistful melody and lyrics (Sidewalk scenes, and black limousines...). I never particularly noticed the guitar solo and I'm surprised to learn that it was influenced by Coltrane - but then I couldn't really identify Coltrane's style as I've never listened to him much.

BTW, the live version of 8MH on Untitled is a wonderful 17-min jam which is easily my fave version of the song.
I that the revamped version of Eight Mile High, where they turn it into a jam session?

Well I know the Perfumed Garden show by name only. However I have listen to a few Peel Sessions. He was always a character I admired. Some of my favorite bands all unrelated music-wise had one thing in common: they appeared in one his broadcast sessions.

It seems to make sense, but I can still think of far more crappy debuts than disappointing follow ups. I think the worst of an artist is often the first album, since that's where they're at their most unrefined and amateur. Especially in metal. I can't think of a metal debut that's the best of the band in question.

Best because they’re raw and undefined.

^ Yes, that's right, a live jam: Untitled is one of those double albums that had a studio disc and a live disc, like Ummagumma, Wheels of Fire or Eat A Peach. For me, it's about the best album The Byrds ever made: more rock, less pop or country than usual.

^ My older brother used to listen to John Peel's radio shows, so I grew up absorbing his musical choices. What with classical music and talk radio, there was a time in Britain when there was only one radio station dedicated to pop music and that station had just one dj who would play prog/rock music. That's why it was called "underground music": you could only hear it broadcast in public for a couple of hours a week, when a JP show was on. Consequently, JP had a huge and unique reputation among the "underground" music fraternity; he always played non-mainstream music, and his opinion could make or break a band, which meant that (i) bands were eager to play in one of his sessions and (ii) they always put on their best performance. So, as Psy-Fi noted once, any "Peel Session" recording is likely to be worth a listen.
