Slayer's South of heaven is a pretty boring album to me. Other than BEFORE YOU SEE THE LIGHT, YOU MUST DIEEEEEEEEE, nothing on that album has stuck in my head and made me want to play it again. Reign in blood is 5X better

Thrash metal is the most overrated metal genre. It's the most popular, but also a genre that's easy to be done with. There's really not that many interesting thrash bands - and the most interesting ones usually aren't all that thrashy.

There’s no other genre where I’m so forgiving of so many bands that simply follow a formula.

I would probably be more forgiving too, if I cared more about the most common elements of thrash. But that whole schtick with the fast rhythm changes and the very sort of compartmentalised riff structures and the frantic soloing... I get that it's supposed to feel energizing and heavy, but most fast paced thrash has little in the way of groove, so I don't really connect with it on a visceral level. Then I end up looking closer at what's really going on, musically speaking, and then that sort of sinks the ship for me.
