Ok.

The Clash was an awful band.
So was the Smiths.
And the Velvet Underground.
And Joy Division.
And The Cure*.
The Cars, The Police, Devo. Also bad.

Come to think of it, if a band is named "The [insert word]", I tend to dislike them.

*A Forest is a cool song at least.

Sorry. If it's any consolation, it should be kept in mind that I'm generally just not fond of rock music, new wave and whatever other categories these fall in. Three to four dudes with guitars that aren't playing metal = a recipe that tends to leave me frowny faced and with an itchy skip-button finger.

Anyone who can't appreciate White Light/White Heat is not worth my time.

And "Venus in Furs" is still one of the greatest rock songs ever. Along with a few other of theirs. I mean c'mon!

Approximately zero percent of those bands have 3 or 4 guitarists....

I'm not denying their impact on future artists, but their music does nothing for me at all. I mean, not even a little. Not the album, not Venus in Furs. It's not actively bad, just completely uninteresting. I'm not sure what I would call the best rock song of all time, but it would probably be something by PJ Harvey or Queen or Roxy Music.

Yeah ok so I write garbled sentences more often than not because I don't read what I'm writing.

*hurl*

Even if VU weren't the hardest rock group, you knew they felt that **** hard. And implying that ****ing Queen (with the caveat that Freddie Mercury is amazing) could **** with "Sister Ray" honestly kind of astounds me, except in a pop sense. Cause Queen can be fun, but never as cool as VU or "Sister Ray".

They probably meant everything they did very sincerely but I'm just not feeling it. The singing style, the guitar riffs... it all just sounds like a load of affected attitude to me, and I don't think it's very involving. This is just how I react to it, of course. I just don't connect with regular rock music, which is why I'm bringing up poppy, melodic cheese like Queen. Freddie Mercury has an amazing voice and I like them for that more than anything.

I thought about it some more and arrived at the conclusion that the best rock song ever recorded is Bryan Ferry's solo career version of the Roxy Music song Sea Breezes. I feel like this choice just demonstrates how what I want from rock is different from what most rock actually is.

Basically, I admit to not appreciating what the genre is generally really about at the core.
