I was trying to see if I could think of something that would really qualify as "fighting words", but also be something I really mean honestly. I could think of a few things:
1 - Opeth are enormously boring. Akerfeldts somnambulant singing is the most robotic, least emotionally affecting clean metal band vocals I've ever heard. He got a little better as a singer on the two most recent albums, but the music got a lot worse. 2 - Progressive rock from the 70's is unbearably corny to me. I can't stand it. 3 - No one in the beatles was very good with their instrument, neither very good at the microphone. The drummer was almost bad. 4 - As much flak as pop music catches from music nerds, I find most rock music to be equally boneheaded and unimaginative. That includes plenty of respected bands. I don't see how Guns'n'Roses is any less daft than Britney Spears. Of course I'm generalizing crazy much here. 5 - Most people who act superior over how they have wider tastes than people who aren't music nerds... still ignore 99% of all music types in existence themselves... 6 - No, music wasn't better in the past. You just got old and boring and stopped taking an active interest in the world around you. |

Ringo is the greatest rock'n'roll drummer of all time.

I understand where you're coming from with the cheesy element of prog, so I though I'd bring up King Crimson since I'd consider them the opposite of that. Going into the jazzier side of prog that almost doesn't count as prog with artists like Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, or Magma will lead you to some cool places too. I'd mention artists like Yes and Gentle Giant but I'm sure you're aware enough of their sound.

That old joke (possibly first done by a music critic, I think) applies for me: "Yes?" "No." The other ones I could probably stand to listen to a little more since I've never heard that much. Soft Machine, maybe not at all. No they don't have to be at all. It just annoys me when people act like they were these genius demi-gods of music who could do everything better than anyone else. I've met my share of people who worship the Beatles like that, so that's probably why I like the take them down a peg. |
