Default Out with the old in with the new.

More of a coincidence maybe. A list of not-so-great albums that were released in the beginning years of a new genre.

1985 Post Hardcore in, The Clash out
The Clash ‎– Cut The Crap

1991 Grunge in, out - 80s bands out
U2 ‎– Achtung Baby
R.E.M. ‎– Out Of Time
Genesis ‎– We Can't Dance
Def Leppard ‎– Adrenalize

For example The Clash were the band of the 70s and in 1980 they were at the fore breaking new boundaries, they went commercial in 1982. By '85 they they lost their knack and released a dead grotty album which incidentally coincided with beginning of Post-Hardcore. The best album Genesis released in the 80s was an eponymous album simply called "Genesis." By the time the Grunge era crash landing on take-off Genesis was releasing commercialize bologna. Shame on R.E.M. for witting Shiny Happy People. They released it 1991. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. nuff said.

Out of Time is the only non-terrible album you mentioned.

I don't hate, but I don't entirely love it. Shiny Happy People ruins the totality of the album. REM could had shown the world what underground music could really be like, instead they opt for a big fat cheesy Pop song.

Shiny Happy People versus Siva - nuff said.
