Nothing, as long as you store it properly.

First thing you have to remember is the type of music I grew up loving prior to punk making waves. Hendrix, Cream, Sabbath, Purple, Zep, Queen, Yes, early Genesis, Mahavishnu, Dixie Dregs, Return to Forever, etc. Definitely lots of pretension involved by the mid 70s but also lots of energy and fun too. Music you could sit back, close your eyes, and be completely immersed in.

Then BAM! The tag team of disco and punk came along. I actually dug disco more than punk back then. While there was some great stuff coming out of the punk movement there was a ****load of pure dreck.

Dudes who could barely tune a guitar or bass and knew only I-V chords, drummers who played nothing but do-do-Deh, do-do-Deh, do-do-Deh, do-do-Deh, and "singers" who couldn't really sing and basically just shouted and screamed all the time, were forming bands left and right. In the span of a year there were literally thousands of punks bands that sprung up. Mainly because it took almost zero talent to play most of that stuff.

While I understand the attraction it had to a lot of kids at the time (and still does) it just never did it for me. It's fine if you dig black coffee. Me? I like mine with some cream and sugar.

Skill is meaningless when the music is great. What's really funny is that a lot of those complaints you make were directed at the rock music you grew up by the old men of that time.

That's the problem. Too much of what's labeled punk isn't great. For every Hüsker Dü there's dozens and dozens of just plain crap bands.

They attributed loud with having no talent. My dad was one of them. When I started playing guitar he'd snicker and make me listen to some Chet Atkins.

I finally got him to sit down and really listen to stuff like Little Wing, Black Mountain Side, The Clap, Can Utility and the Coastliners, etc. and then sat in front of him and played Mood for a Day. And once I played him some Dixie Dregs where Steve Morse played Chet Atkins type stuff in overdrive, he came around.

I get that, but dude, you listen to fusion.

Kinda like how people attribute complexity with talent?

Knew this one was coming. You can write a great song with 3 chords. You can write a crappy song with 3 chords. You can create a masterpiece with a million notes. You can create a train-wreck with a million notes.

And how about those folks like you who immediately write stuff off if it a) uses a traditional melodic approach, and b) is played by a virtuoso?

It's sad that you think I'm this way just because I won't lather the dicks of what you consider undisputed classics. Know that you're way off base here, especially the virtuoso bit (I'm a free jazz fanatic, come on).

Ya, cause you're too busy getting tea bagged by every new experimental noise "artist" that comes through your door.

Undisputed Classic Alert:

You are a genuine idiot with a negative IQ.

Dregs are good, not great.
