There's something we agree on--I love the Clash, too. I don't think it's an unpopular opinion that they're great, although I don't see people plugging them as often as I used to.

Re punk, I'd say that they were only punk on their first two albums (which might be a more unpopular opinion, but that's what I'd say).

Here's the difference: over time, people started abbreviating the term, saying "metal" rather than "heavy metal." Just like people say "Priest" instead of "Judas Priest," "prog" instead of "progressive rock," or "Joe" instead of "Joseph."

I'd need to listen to those first three albums again with the question in mind to give my verdict, but re the way I use the terms, what makes the difference between hard rock and metal is that metal has significant prog influences re song structures, including more unusual harmonic and rhythmic content, whereas hard rock tends to stick closer to traditional pop song structures.

Just because you have a heavy distorted guitar sound and riff heavy chorus doesn't make you metal. Nick Oliveri's scream isn't even metal. Alice and Chains isn't metal. Nirvana isn't metal. Royal Blood isn't metal.

QOTSA isn't metal.
