It has a punk primary tag on RYM with pop punk secondary. I kinda agree, I like it a bit too but it does fall a tad short. Still miles better than their last four albums.

Ok so, based on enthusiastic recommendations I've listened to a bit of A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead. I was even told that track 4 (Desert Island Disk) was the best thing ever!
Now, I haven't spent much time at all with the new album and I know that I'm not being entirely fair, but based on my reactions so far and based on my familiarity with the band's past output, I simply have to ask: What's the deal with this band anyway? I'm not going to say that Radiohead is crap, just that I don't really see the genius. They've got a unique sound, but I'm not getting much out of the fairly minimal and repetitive arrangements. At least track 5 - Full Stop - was pretty cool, but also guilty of what I just said. The best track ever did less for me. Either I still just don't get it, or Radiohead isn't all they're made out to be. How could one person be wrong? It must be everyone else. |

Don't worry. I didn't get it for a very very long time, but I was convinced when I heard their new album, and from then on, I listened to their other work, and somehow, I was able to enjoy it, and now I listen to them almost daily. You have to be in the right mood and you also have to be willing to put up with Thom Yorke regardless of what you think of his voice, because prior to this, I used to think Thom Yorke couldn't sing for ****, but now I love his hauntingly beautiful and sometimes out of tune voice.

I don't have problems with Yorke's voice, I actually think that it generally fits the music quite well. The issue I have is that his voice is matched up with some really boring crap.

Not a criticism, but an observation: Their music seems to very often consist of a beat loop + a melody/chord loop with some singing on top. Then some subtle details fall slightly outside of the rhythm and a stray sound or unexpected chord here or there kind of shake things up a bit, but the arrangements are simple aside from these little details. They also use a lot of ambience in the background, but the individual songs don't exactly move between many different unique parts. Just an observation. Not everything has to be an orchestral suite. |
