Just speculation
There are sixteen albums of his (including live albums) which I've heard in their entirety dozens of times.

Unless I'm interrupted for some reason and it's a long time until I can get back to it, it's never that I don't listen to a release (whether an album, an EP, a single, a box set--whatever it is) from start to finish. That doesn't just go for Bowie, it goes for everything I listen to. I never cut anything short, and I never skip any tracks.

What I'm talking about is that he's so quickly been assimilated into the classic rock canon

But nobody could name me a Bowie album if I asked around my work, it's more a compliment than anything else
Ah, well, the listening habits of "just plain folks" is something I can't comment on much any longer. I haven't hung around with many just plain folks as they play music for leisure listening purposes for a long time.

What's the general opinion on Sam Dunn?

He made an alright documentary with a legendary performance by the belligerently drunk bassist from Mayhem.

He's so so. I don't care for him too much. One thing I didn't like was he absorbed a lot of non Metal genres into what he visioned as a familytree of Metal. However bands that were once generally known weren't called Heavy Metal were referred to as "Heavy music" in his documentary. Like he was carefully not to call late 60s bands Metal yet comfortable incorporating everything else Metal, like Punk, Goth and Hardcore. I always thought that Hardcore was against mainstream day-glo Hair Metal.

I listen to anyone's opinion about music, but I don't neccesarily agree them. I'm only curious about their perspective, so I watched as much as possible his movie and documentaries on Metal.

Every time you start talking about metal and then end up talking about hair metal you sound like a moron.
