The best way to wind up anyone on a music forum is to take a pop at NMH.
But seriously though, what riffs? Also I know NMH are somewhat of a cult band but is that enough to say they're popular? Ask most people you know and they wouldn't have a clue who they are. |

I don't know how unpopular it is to say these days, but I really hate guitar solos. There are only a few songs that actually benefit from lengthy solos. This includes Clapton and Hendrix alongside ELP, Yes, and the like.

Of all the Indie bands that are hyped into oblivion, you had to pick on one of the good ones.

Great solos can go on forever. Maggot Brain goes on for 10 minutes, and at no point does it really bore me, it's just a very intense amazing guitar solo. |

I'll second the NMH hate, and boo boo is wrong. NMH is probably among the worst sounding bands in history. They're just so insufferably terrible that its hard to put into words. Everything that made Tiny Tim a bad vocalist exists tenfold in Mangum's voice and vocal style. His lyrics are decent though. The music sounds like it was composed by a bunch of 10 year olds who figured out how to play their first two chords, and they play those chords in a way that would make even Kurt Cobain sound semi-talented. Its just bad. Like Kimya Dawson bad, but worse.

And it's like saying you hate virtuosity. I'm with you on that one, boo boo. And on Neutral Milk Hotel too. |

This is actually a really hard question to answer since it isn't for any technical reason. I just feel so disconnected from her music that its beyond unenjoyment. For me its like listening to a wall of sound thats the equivalent of a talking mom with a guitar.
