Well, I'd say the newer stuff definitely is more like weezer. More alt rock rather then punk.

Green Day and Weezer both feel like power pop. Punk or alternative or whatever, they still sound like power pop.

Maybe if you analyze the underlying riff styles and such, they aren't that different from each other musically if you contrast certain Green Day and Weezer albums. What is punk music if not just three chords and a lot of downstrokes?
