I still liked The Beatles for awhile. Good band
I can't get into the beatles. It's not that they are a relatively poppy band, it's just that they... sort of sound like a bunch of mommas boys in knit sweaters. It seems so quaint to me.

About the Pixies: Don't remember any of their songs. Just remember trying and failing to like them at all.

Good point I guess. Everyhing will remain available on the net, so from here on, it's all up the individual. Cultural gatekeepers have less power than ever.
EDIT: That theoretically makes Musicbanter an important cultural entity, since these threads will remain for years and years. Old Rollingstone articles (from the age of print), on the other hand, are long forgotten.

Exactly, so why should we give a **** about the bands we're told to care about, like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Clash, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Buzzcocks, PiL, Joy Division, Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, or any other band the past tells us to listen to?

Clean? The Beetles were considered scandalous for their time.

This is sort of a positive unpopular opinion for once, but I feel like were currently in the middle of a sort of an explosion of great music. Everyone and their uncle has access to means of making music. Sure, this means a lot of **** is produced, but it also means that any creative sould who has something to say can get it out there. There's no money in music now, but the art is flourishing.

The Beetles were the Justin bribery or the one direction of their time. Parents hate them while their daughters worshipped the ground they walked on.

It's sort of sad that music isn't worth a dime these days. That really does make me sad. But I also feel like it is good for the art (not the artist) that there is very little fame or wealth to be made from music now. This means only those who really mean it stick around.

This usually happens when you have small labels that work as patrons regardless of long term profit

See: Factory Records

I'm not at all nostalgic for the days where a band I like could make multi-millions. I'm glad that died for the most part
Yeah I think some solo artists and bands do allright financially while managing to do what they want artistically. Most probably aren't that lucky.

I think it's fair to say that guys in huge rock bands mostly just wanted to get famous, get rich and get laid. Making great art was a distant fourth priority at best.

What's kind of depressing to me is that when these sorts of "why are we worrying about older generations' music" discussions pop up, and folks name artists they shouldn't feel obligated to pay much attention to, you almost never hear folks mention the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin etc. any longer. Those folks seem to really have been forgotten by the majority in younger generations, and they were all easily Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd/Bruce Springsteen/etc. or even Beatles-caliber famous in their day.
