Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were heavy metal (as were Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, etc.). KISS, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Ted Nugent (at least releasing albums as Ted Nugent, sans "Amboy Dukes"), Alice Cooper (at least after their first album or two), etc. were hard rock. There were some artists who kind of straddled the two, also, like Iron Butterfly and Grand Funk Railroad. The difference was that the heavy metal artists had notable prog influences, whereas the hard rock groups were doing stuff that had some stylistic similarities to heavy metal, but they employed that style in the context of what were essentially pop songs--intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-type song structures, with more typical pop harmonic content, rhythmic content, etc. And I'd still say that's the difference between (heavy) metal and hard rock (which among other things, underscores that "hair metal" was a misnomer, as that was hard rock, not metal, because most of it uses pop song structures without any significant prog influences). |

I agree with his sentiments.

Michael Gira's vocals are very lazy about 90% of the time.

Yeah. I remember that. There's a fine line between hard rock and heavy metal. LZ never really went beyond that for a full album. I can see "Rock and Roll" being heavy metal. Sabbath, yes. I wouldn't know about Uriah Heep. Never listened to a full album, and I'll get to that later. But Zep, nah.
