No and no.

I'd call them pop rock, like Journey.

Journey started out hard rock but went pop pretty quickly.

So how would you characterize hard rock, Chula?

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. Compared to those three Kiss were pretty poppy.

I am guessing it annoys you when that song comes.

So would you say that heavy metal just didn't exist in the 70s? (Well, at least in the earlier 70s?)

It's a really grey area. Sabbath was the most HM of those three. Once the NWOBHM hit the scene the genre became more clearly defined.

I always considered Zep and Purple to be Hard Rock and not Heavy Metal.

EDIT

Kiss Alive will never, ever be confused with Made in Japan or How the West was Won when it comes to being hard rock.
