Bought that at a record store just because the cover looked cool. Had no idea how much it was gonna change my entire life.
I basically became an Alex clone because of Caress of Steel and all of the subsequent albums.

Imagine if Chula picked this one out?

I imagine he'd be dead. We all win.

You are the first person I've seen say it was Caress of Steel that changed their life. That album is more or less universally accepted as the low point of their prog days. The tour was called the "Down the Tubes" tour because they thought they were finished.

It undoubtedly has some excellent moments that hint at the genius that would be 2112, but I can't say I reach for Caress of Steel too often.

Listening to 2112.
Sounds like slightly pimped and stretched hard rock.
Sure, somewhat proggy, but miles away from anything I'd really call prog.
Also the vocals suck. And the guitar sound. Also still boring.

Does prog have a particular sound to you? I know a lot of people associate prog with something like the Canterbury scene. All that stuff sounds the same to me, which kind of goes against what I think "progressive rock" means.

Hemispheres is probably Rush's proggiest album.

That's a tough question.
I certainly have some kind of intuitive response to music that categorizes it as prog or non-prog (or something in-between like in this case). But if I take my two favourite 'classic' prog bands, King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, they sound nothing alike.
I guess Frownland is right and I'm just unable to hear past the poppiness. Although obviously my genre categorization doesn't influence my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of the music either way.

Agreed. This is the only VU song that can touch Metal Machine Music.

Do you honestly listen to MMM and enjoy it?

Even Trollheart eventually came to enjoy it.
And obviously people who love noise and drone anyway do.

Yeah, I'll admit Rush is certainly one of the poppier prog bands (which is why they were successful transitioning to more of a radio-friendly sound when so many prog bands failed at the same thing).
