They are a decent band, I liked their first two albums. Not sure if they have released anything since.

I'd take Mumford over Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver truthfully. That's not really saying much though.

Also I don't know what you are actually referring to with"contemporary music." Do you mean "contemporary [Pop] music," "contemporary [Heavy Metal] music" or just music in general that's been released recently? I'm not particularly a fan of either Pop or Metal, but I would not go as far to say either lacks in "technical proficiency." Of course a backup musician in Pop music plays it safe, or only play what they have to, but by doing that doesn't mean they are talentless. I am not an expert on Metal, but I don't see a dearth of talent there either. In fact Metal riffs today are faster and more complex than they ever were in Hair Metal.
I like plenty of contemporary music, so I'm not saying it was better in "days of yore". I am saying that technical proficiency is not something that many people use as a criteria for good music anymore in popular music. People are still making technically proficient music, sure...but you aren't going to hear it on the radio. Not like you would 2 or 3 decades ago. Kirk Hammett - being a popular musician to this day - then becomes the exception, and other popular musicians of today you might compare him to are not as technically proficient.

One of the greatest bands ever.

^Woah.
Not only isn't it LZ, it's actually a legitimately amazing band.
There might be hope for you after all.

Isn't it better to consider the whole spectrum of music as opposed to just what's popular? Because the modern musicians that I would compare him to are not exactly popular.

For the purposes of my comparison, I'm lumping him in with musicians that are generally just as popular. Considering that, I think my point stands.

But thinking of the entire spectrum...yeah, the guy isn't all that great.
