If we are comparing him to the best players of his time, then yeah, he's really not that great. Technical proficiency isn't something that's really valued in contemporary music anymore, so compared to the players of today he's excellent.

Wasn't that the original appeal?

I think they turned mediocrity into genius. The ultimate Fanfare for the Common Man.

I really don't buy that. In a way your remark is pretty close to "music was better in the days of yore." Like only "technical proficiency" was achieved and valued twenty-five* years ago, but not today. *Twenty-five years ago when Meticalla was in their heyday.

Also I don't know what you are actually referring to with"contemporary music." Do you mean "contemporary [Pop] music," "contemporary [Heavy Metal] music" or just music in general that's been released recently? I'm not particularly a fan of either Pop or Metal, but I would not go as far to say either lacks in "technical proficiency." Of course a backup musician in Pop music plays it safe, or only play what they have to, but by doing that doesn't mean they are talentless. I am not an expert on Metal, but I don't see a dearth of talent there either. In fact Metal riffs today are faster and more complex than they ever were in Hair Metal.

I don't care for My Bloody Valentine or The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Ramones weren't the first punk band and they suck.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.
