I gotta question for you, do you see any artistic merit in lyrics? i think vocalist have alot of guts, i find it's way easier to play your guitar and focus on that than getting on a mic and singing something i wrote.

It feels alot more vulnerable because your voicing your view on life and exposing who you are through your words as opposed to relying solely on your instrument to do it for you.
I don't even know what I would call artistic merit since I'm not too concerned about it. But yes, I think that lyrics can be important or extremely beneficial to a song. Look at Beefheart, his lyrics make his already incredible music even better. I do agree that it does take a lot more guts to perform as a vocalist, but that doesn't mean much tbh. It takes more stamina to play the saxophone than the guitar, but I still prefer the sound of the guitar to sax.

Well luckily for me my parents never forced me into anything and just let me figure out what I believed on my own, so I can at least give a no to the bible school part

I just always felt a heavy religious slant to their music is all. Yeah bible school got a no from me also.

Funny, King's X are (or at least were) a very religious band that did everything to try to hide it.

@Frown

For me it's not so much what you say it's how you say it.

The most vocal driven band i like is guided by voices but i don't really pay much attention to Robert Pollard's lyrics, i pay attention to the vocal harmonies he creates to contrast the band's simple guitar rhythms.

The vocals in that song are pretty good but the message is kinda funny. It is so aimed at highschool kids overwhelmed by puberty.

Yeah, they always confused me with that. Clearly some strong pro-life lyrics and things like that but in concert they would make anti-christian cracks that left me scratching my head. Not being a religious person myself I'm glad they never went the full on christian music route.
