My points are, you could probably earn more money working at Burger King until you get help from a label, unless you are constantly touring. Secondly if you'd read instead of assume, I'm saying it is vital to purchase albums when you can. I download music. Shocker, eh? I also go back and buy it if I like it, and if I don't it goes straight to the little folder called "The Recycling Bin".
I host mp3's on my own website. I'm not here to make an agenda of abolishing downloading, I'm just proving my point that record labels need record sales. It's not the hardest thing to understand.

agreed.

I enjoy making money of doing something I like.

Crowquill, I understand what you're saying, and that's fine if thats what you choose to do with your music. No problem there. You just dont understand what WE'RE saying. So maybe you just love knowing that people are actually paying attention to your music, that's fine. And maybe you don't care if you make any money off of it as long as people are listening, that's fine too. But you have to understand that not all bands are like you. Bands that are already getting exposure depend on sales, period. If you're going to college, then a career in music is most likely not what you're pursuing. But there are bands that want to do what they love to make a living. Not just to work at some ****ty job and play at local clubs whenever they have the spare time. If you truly love music, then you should be able to understand why some bands only want to play it. And if they can make a living just from their music, then why not? That's their ultimate goal. Plus, if they do have a career in music. They have more time to focus on the music that they produce. Thus, making it that much better. But they need the money to support all the time they're spending trying to make the best product possible. Look at it this way, do you think Wal Mart would still be around and be such a big franchise if they just invested money into everything in the store and just gave it away for free without making any profit? of course not. You have to spend money to make money. So if bands invest alot of time and money into making music, and they get nothing back....then just like any other business, IT WILL DIE.

See one huge flaw in your analogy. Record companies aren't just going to start giving everything away, and if Wal Mart did do that they would've gotten a hell of alot of exposure.

Also, I do plan to make music my career but im not so stupid as to think that its going to work out and boom off automatically. I need a back up plan and i'd prefer to get a good one.

Also I realize bands do that for a living and all, it doesn't make me feel bad especially when you have assholes like Trophy Scars who are pricks to their fans, i'd download from then anyday.

Once again, i'm not going to make myself suffer just to look like I have morals. Especailly not for something as materialistic as music.

That's not a flaw, that's just you looking for an easy way out of that particular argument. If you ever did well in the business, would you prefer making the music and working another job 24/7, or would you like enough money to make music your life? You act like this is rocket science here, since our point is fairly simple.

EDIT: And no I don't think you should blow all your cash on music.
I'm just saying to buy it if you like it, when you can afford to.

cfhpantera 09-22-2006 07:08 PM

I wasn't talking about the record companies. I was talking about downloading music. Dude, it's cool if you dont have the cash to buy cds and you want to listen to these bands. I'm just talking about the people that do have the money to buy cds but would much rather just download it for free and leave it at that. Yeah, I realize that alot of bands have been signed thanks to the exposure they received from the internet. But even more bands have suffered because of it. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth either and I work almost everyday but I still buy cds. It's a completely different story if you dont have enough money to buy cds or whatever. As long as you do something to support them. Whether it be buying a cd whenever you can afford it or something as simple as referring them to a friend. Which could be a bad thing if that friend is the type that we've been talking about.....has the money to buy the album but just downloads it instead.

I am 32 and professionally employed. I steal whatever music that I can, if I cannot find a torrent I have to bite the bullet and buy it. I can afford to buy Cd's, I just don't choose to. The 23 bucks that I spend on a Cd could buy me a case of beer or something, so I don't buy Cd's that I can easily download. I really don't give a sh!t about the artist due to the fact that I don't know them and they don't know me, if I enjoy said artist I will see them live when they come to my town and more than likely drop $40.00 at their merch table.

This is the way I see things and I sleep like a baby at night

For one if you pay 23 dollars for a cd, you need a check-up from the neck-up.

cfhpantera 09-22-2006 07:33 PM

yeah, and secondly.....sounds like you have a very meaningful life.

I have no complaints. I worked 8 hours last night then came home and listened to some tunes in my hot tub for about an hour, life is VERY good to me
