Give me a reason why those bands are good.
And if you say it's because they're melodic, then I swear to god, I will rip your scrotum out with my bare hands. |

TV on the Radio are good because they can successfully turn a Pixies song into a beautiful doo wop ballad. And, beyond that, because they blend influences as diverse as electronica, spirituals, and indie rock to create music so atmospheric and beautiful. The main instrument in their music is the vocals, and they're layered, rich, and moving, unlike most of the other bands you listed.
Oh yeah, that and Pitchfork told me to like them. And as for Guided By Voices, if you like The Pixies and grunge I really don't see why you wouldn't like them. I would try to defend their music, but I'm assuming that's just a matter of personal taste, or maybe you haven't heard any of their better material. |

Cursive and Built to spill write really creative and even catchy popish songs. How can you go wrong? They write better songs than anything I have ever heard on the radio. Ever. You say you like mainstream music so much but you're ****ting on these bands that have more talent and songwriting ability than anything popular. It doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not trying to convince you to listen to em, I'm just pointing out that you may be an idiot if you think they make worse music than what's on the radio. I mean look at the new RHCP album. Horrid. They have a lot of talent and never seem to use it as much as they could.

Built To Spill as far as I'm concerned have no talent, if you think they're catchy then great, I'm sure you enjoy tons of commercial jingles.
But many bands mainstream or not are much better musicians than Built To Spill, mainly for their abillity to advance up to song structures that don't sound like they were composed by 3 year old children. Maybe compared to other crappy overexposed Indie bands they are good, but you could go to any local bar and find better... Granted Stadium Arcadium isn't too great, but it's better than anything I have heard by Built To Spill or their imitators (Modest Mouse, Wolf Parade, etc)... And overall, RHCP are a more respectable band for actually putting effort into their music in addition to actually knowing how to play music. |

I prefer underground bands that have just grasped enough attention to tone their shit and get good enough to go to a level where they release an album before they go mainstream.

There's good mainstream music, there's bad mainstream music - there's good underground music, there's bad underground music. I'd say it's about even.
