not gonna read through the whole thread to check, but i hope that DOWN was mentioned somewhere in here. Clutch is obviously an awesome band... And I do dig Maylene & He Is Legend. But DOWN, to me, is by far the first thing that comes to mind when dealing with this genre. I've seen them twice, and they were amazing both times.

Seeing Clutch at Bonnaroo this year, I can't wait. I've loved these guys for at least 5 years now but never got around to seeing them live.

Now that I think about it... He Is Legend wasn't really Southern Rock at all until "Suck Out The Poison". Anyone with me on this? And 91025 is my favorite CD of theirs, by far.

Lynryd Skynrd are great. Combined the soulfulness of country music with boogie rock better than just about anybody else in my opinion.

I always prefered Dickey Betts' guitar playing over Duane Allmans. Dunno why, I just love his tone.

I still like the original Allman Brothers Band the best.

Boo Boo- I totally agree, I love ****ey's playing. He has such a great style. 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' is amazing.

My southern fav's are the Allmans, Skynard, Black Crowes. I have the "Dreams" ABB box set on lp.
One of the 'New' southern rock discs I recomend is Zack Wylde's 'Pride and Glory'. He pays tribute to the style without sound cheesy.
'Kings of Leon', I like too. Sounds like: "Drunken, sloppy, garage-rock Skynard"

The James Gang, ZZ Top (more Southwestern), Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, CCR (From California but the songs were southern)
