no.. i just meant that when i was a fan of popular music, greatest hits albums didnt appeal. would be pointless answering in terms of the bands i like now... as they just dont release them.

I just found it strange because how popular something is has never really meant anything to me. I don`t care if an album sells 1 copy or 10 million copies if I think it`s good I think it`s good.

I realise that the stuff you like would probably struggle to sell a few thousand copies , and that has absolutly nothing to do with the quality of the music on it , but I just don`t understand why you would consider what you listen to now as not popular. I mean are you saying everything you listen to is like that? no childhood favourites? No guilty pleasures that you secretly put on when nobody is about?

I hate greatest hits albums they suck. It's a release for the sake of having a release.

Depends. Some bands are just singles bands, where you might like the majority of their output, but there's always those few songs on each CD that really stand out. For those bands Greatest Hits are often the way to go. Other bands are album bands, that create great albums that are meant to be listened to all the way through, and have a great flow, and all the songs go together. For bands like those, who often change their sound from album to album, a greatest hits compilation doesn't really work because the songs don't fit well together and often it's hard to even pick the "hits" since their songs are all great in their own way in which they fit into the CD they came off of.

Most greatest hits albums miss out essential songs so I usually don't like them. However, there are some good ones like What Hits?! by RHCP which gave a great selection of their early work.

i like Tool.. and the first Cooper Temple Clause album (and a few bands who are popular in their own scene - neurosis, isis, converge etc) but thats about it it temrs of mainstream popularity... everything else i just grew out of, and theres nothing i like on the radio now.

Singles collections i find are pretty useful, especially with bands who release a lot of singles which aren't on an album. Buzz****s - Singles Going Steady pops into my mind as being a fine compilation.

I personally adore compilations like The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs and Morrissey - Bona Drag, a collection of singles (a lot which were'nt on albums) and b-sides, all in one place.

I like B Side albums a lot more than greatest hits ones.

Suede`s Sci Fi Lullabies B Sides album was better than their last 3 studio albums.
