Brit-Pop Official Thread

Discuss everything Brit-Pop here.

My favourite Brit-Pop bands:

Blur
The Smiths
Libertines
Razorlight
Arctic Monkeys
Suede
Snow Patrol

DontRunMeOver 07-24-2006 08:07 AM

I love Brit-Pop, especially Blur and Pulp and now Arctic Monkeys. I love the style of lyrics and the way that the singers manage to keep their speaking accent while singing. Well, Damon Albarn didn't do that so much, but if you're British, then its better to sound British when you sing instead of some weird fake American accent (a lot of bands from Wales and London do this for some reason).

TrampInaTux 07-24-2006 08:17 AM

Damon Albarn does keep his normal voice, it's just a bit more high pitched and pained.

The most recent Brit-Pop band I've got into are Suede, they are real good. You should check them out, you've probably heard a few of their songs like The Beautiful Ones etc. They are a bit different from the Brit-Pop norm.

DontRunMeOver 07-24-2006 08:22 AM

I've listend before, although I'm not such a fan because of Brett Anderson. His voice grates and the lyrics of his that I remember struck me as a bit pointless.

TrampInaTux 07-24-2006 09:00 AM

His voice isn't the Brit-Pop norm but I still think it's really good, and his lyrics are brilliant. You should listen more.

Those two right there... genius.

A lot of the others are, I think, justly forgotten. Boo Radleys, The Bluetones and Menswear all had a certain lameness to them which is difficult to pinpoint. I think its a lack of flair, creativeness, sparkle, aggression, romance and general groin. Floppy **** seems an appropriate phrase.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-24-2006 11:18 AM

You should hear the Boo Radleys Giant Steps album.

A wonderful example of trippy psychadelic rock , much better than the crap they did later that sold by the bucket load.

Brit-Pop is having a nice resurgence as of late. Can anyone tell me the name of the band who sing the songs Hot Summer and She's Attracted To? They seem like a band to look out for.

Also, Milburn seem to be a new band that will take the limelight soon. My girlfriend went to a concert of theirs and said it was the best concert she's been to. It sounds like they had a lot of Brit-Pop bands there and a band that was heavily mentioned was Karma 45 (who I haven't downloaded anything by yet) check them out. Everyone's talking about them at the moment.

The Young Knives. Good choice.

I listened to Milburn a few weeks ago. Really good tunes. The ones I heard seemed to throw in a lot of folky melodies with the rock, of which I wholeheartedly approve.

TrampInaTux 07-24-2006 12:52 PM

Cheers mate, that's an album I will be buying.

The lead singer seems to be an instantly iconic figure, with his chubbiness and overall doesn't fit in look. And yeah, Milburn are good. I wouldn't call them anything special but they do seem to fit the Brit Pop mould and should become really big soon.

And even with all their stick, the Razorlight album is really good. I would suggest you all listen.

Also, Guillemots! They're good, check em out.

boo boo 07-25-2006 12:19 AM

I like a lot of pop, I like a lot of brits, I don't like much brit-pop.

Ironic huh?

TrampInaTux 07-25-2006 03:28 AM

What have you heard boo boo?

boo boo 07-25-2006 05:20 AM

Well, that i like... Blur, MSP, Pulp, Stereolab, etc.

And i love The Smiths, if they count.

TrampInaTux 07-25-2006 03:59 PM

The Smiths do count, yes. I would also listen to Suede aswell... they were likened to The Smiths in their heyday for their lyrics, although some people dislike the lead singers voice. I think it's great though.

Rabid Sea Turtles 07-25-2006 04:02 PM

The Smiths are like the pre-curser to Brit-Pop, but I don't actually consider them brit pop.

TrampInaTux 07-25-2006 04:05 PM

I think people see them as too good to be classified as Brit-Pop.

Piss Me Off 07-28-2006 10:05 AM

I don't understand how the Smiths are britpop.

'Definitely Maybe' and 'The Bends' are my favourite britpop albums, apart from that its all about the singles with britpop bands (non cheesy singles.)

This thread has caused 'County House' to ring around in my head, which i'm not thankful for.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-28-2006 11:47 AM

It depends on your definition of what Britpop is.

If you`re defining it as a late 80s early 90s groups of bands then no they are not.

If you`re defining it as bands influenced by classic British pop of the 60s & 70s then yes they are.

However I do find it sad that there has been one band overlooked & thats Orange Juice.Jangly guitar pop with a 'crooner' style vocal that pre-date even the Smiths by a few years. I would be very surprised if Morrissey wasn`t even a little bit influenced by Edwin Collins.

I'm slightleh confused, what is brit-pop? Is it a specific era or just british pop? 'Cause if its the latter wouldn't that make James Blunt brit-pop?

The term Britpop first came around 1992 when bands like Suede , Oasis , Pulp , The Auteurs , Steroelab & PJ Harvey first got record deals. It wasn`t so much a genre or an era. It was used more as a overall reference to the British music scene which had been in decline since the mid 80s.
Most of the original 'Britpop' bands were bands who had been around a few years putting out stuff on indie labels.

Then around 94/95 around the time of the Blur/Oasis war , the major labels latched onto it & began signing anyone who sounded like The Smiths/The Jam/The Beatles and it became a much more generic term.

The 'Britpop' movement died out around 1997. Most of the leading bands of it put out bad albums , most of the also rans sold very few albums and lost their record deals or split up.It died pretty much overnight. Some people claim Britpop died the day Oasis released their Be Here Now album.

sleepy jack 07-28-2006 03:06 PM

Aw k, thank ya for clearin' that up then.

swim 07-30-2006 11:55 AM

I love brit-pop but, I prefer shoegaze.

TrampInaTux 07-30-2006 11:58 AM

I wouldn't say The Bends is a Brit Pop album...

and I have bought 3 Blur albums today. Parklife, Modern Life is Rubbish, and wait for it Urban...

Think tank:)

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-30-2006 12:15 PM

Think Tank = Damon Albarn solo album with members of Blur on it.

Well thats my reasoning for it existing anyway.

TrampInaTux 07-30-2006 12:18 PM

Alex James did a lot of work on it aswell apparently. I actually really like it. Totally different from anything Blur did before, of course, but still good. It's like the missing link between Blur and Gorillaz, and to me that isn't a bad thing.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-30-2006 12:23 PM

Yeah but Albarn was more interested in what Fatboy Slim wanted than members of his own band. There was a reason why Graham Coxon called him 'Big Mouth Slim'

TrampInaTux 07-30-2006 01:19 PM

Fat Boy Slim only produced on 2 of the songs on the album, so that has been blown out of proportion.

NEWS JUST IN: Albarn along with a few of his famous friends are working on a project blah blah blah... just go on nme.com

Already started a thread on it :p:

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-03-2006 02:02 PM

I`ll knock up a kind of compilation album with a load of obscure Britpop and upload it if anybody is interested.

MoonlitSunshine 08-03-2006 02:07 PM

Yeah sure do it.
