Keith Emerson Vs. Rick Wakemen

The epic battle of Prog Rock's most talented Keyboardists . Who do you think would win?
Emerson hails from ELP, and Wakemen has a lucrative history with the symphonic Prog legend YES.

P.s See the hsitory thread for info about Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

Wakeman is the ownage

Wakeman is my favorite, but Emerson is the superior keyboard wizard.

Seltzer 07-15-2006 05:54 AM

I like them both, but I would say Keith Emerson.

I do have to say, it's close... Wakeman gets the versatility card, since he plays a greater range of keyboard instruments including Hammond Organ, Mellotron, Moog, Minimoog, Piano and Harpischord... While Emerson rarely ventures away from his standard Hammond and Moog other than his brillant piano work, Wakeman also has a greater ear for tone variety, every Yes album Wakeman appeared on had a totally different keyboard sound than the last... But Emersons solos are generally more complex and unique as well as more technically difficult, his choice of scales and time meters also tend to be more inventive... Both are amazing improvisers, though Emersons compositional skills nudge out Wakemans by just a little bit. In technical terms it's difinetely Emerson, in originallity terms it's Emerson, in creativity terms i'd say it's a tie.

Damn, he beat him by only five milliseconds. :(

tdoc210 07-15-2006 11:40 AM

It's really a shame about Emerson's hand. I beleive it's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Emerson

tdoc210 07-15-2006 05:42 PM

^ Yes, i voted Emerson, the complexity, it is hard for me to comprehend how to go about playing that stuff.

Merkaba 07-15-2006 05:46 PM

The guy is all over the place, I'm usually not too fussed with musical keys but he actually draws my attention in.

boo boo 07-15-2006 11:32 PM

I'm usually torn between deciding which is better, Tarkus or Karn Evil 9.

dojo 09-07-2006 02:55 PM

I like Wakeman more. I have some albums I totally love, so I chose him.

boo boo 09-07-2006 08:01 PM

Wakemans solo stuff leaves a lot to be desired, I really only liked his second album, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

He has an unusual tendacy of always making albums based on whatever book he's reading at the time.

Merkaba 09-07-2006 08:16 PM

Lol, can we get him reading a book about Armageddon or something then?

DearJenny 09-07-2006 08:41 PM

Wakeman owns.

That would just be too weird.

But it would be funny to hear his musical interpretation of The Devinci Code.
