One question. Why isn't stuff related to "gangsta" rap on this list?

bungalow 06-13-2006 04:08 PM

Because there is a sh*tload of good gangsta rap.

swim 06-13-2006 04:12 PM

Why isn't music magazines on this list?

bungalow 06-13-2006 04:15 PM

Because the people who complied the list are a part of Blender magazine

swim 06-13-2006 04:17 PM

...that was my implication. I hate music magazines. And I especially hate their stupid lists that are plain wrong.

Sorry, I meant "the people who write gangsta rap lyrics".

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-13-2006 04:30 PM

51. Riot Grrl

boo boo 06-13-2006 04:54 PM

I already had my rants about how having Sgt Peppers on the list is just downright bogus.

And Electric Violins pwn, i don't care what anyone says, check out The Mahavishnu Orchestra for proof.

And no Urban, they don't sound anything like ELO. :)

jr. 06-13-2006 07:07 PM

MTV. End of story.

That makes no sense.
Go gangsta rappers are the worst thing to happen to music?

Makes sense if you just think about it. No, gangsta rappers aren't the worst thing that's happened to music. I never said they should be #1. I asked where they were on the list, under the assumption that they should be on there.

Then I changed it to say that it should be the people who write the lyrics. For this reason only -- I think the messages in the majority of the songs are... well, nothing near upstanding.

bungalow 06-13-2006 07:49 PM

There's trashy gangsta rap, and there's good gangsta rap.
Just like any other genre of music.

I think it's funny that Christians focus their energy on gangsta rap, and turn their heads from things like Black Metal, and Death Metal. Gangsta rap is the least of the worlds problems. If some guys wanna rap about getting high and drunk, who cares? I can't stop them, neither can zealous Christians. What about the crazy Norweigen man who sings about crucifying preists and burning churches, protest them.

You could change this to "Music is the least of the world's problems"

Too many people put too much weight on what "music is doing to today's youth! Oh my God!! Did you hear that? "

The youth of today get it. It's the adults that make a big deal about it, you know?

Reznorslave 06-13-2006 07:56 PM

I think the worst thing to happen to music is DRM!

Please, point me in the direction of good gangsta rap. I'm not being (completely) sarcastic - I really would like to see good gangsta rap.

I've listened to both those types of metal, and I'll agree that their lyrics are even worse than those of gangsta rap. Problem is, though... do death and black metal get played on Top 40 radio? That usually defines the mainstream, and face it, many people are mainstream music listeners. Which means more people (well, probably) listen to gangsta rap than death/black metal.

bungalow 06-13-2006 08:05 PM

Does gangsta rap get played on Top 40 radio?
Please, show me every instance that it occurs.

Good gangsta rap? Do you know what gangsta rap is?
NWA

Reznorslave 06-13-2006 08:07 PM

NWA is fantastic! EFIL4ZAGGIN is one of the best albums period!!!

bungalow 06-13-2006 08:08 PM

Straight Outta Compton is great as well.

The Ten Thousandth Fist 06-13-2006 08:31 PM

Then I'll have to check those out. Until then, let's get back to the worst things to happen to music.

jr. 06-13-2006 08:39 PM

I still say MTV. It's when the world stopped listening and started watching music. It made it too easy, too accessible. The thrill was gone, somewhat, going to a concert to see a band you'd seen every day for the past six months on TV.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-13-2006 08:41 PM

I don`t think it`s so much that.

I think the main problem with MTV is you look at what it could be , and then look at what it actually is.

jr. 06-13-2006 08:43 PM

Bands lost some over their mystique. Too visible.

Of course, myself and few other here remember when MTV happened. When it was, in fact, just music videos.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-13-2006 08:48 PM

Yeah but there`s over 50 years of rock music to pick 24 hours a day of programming to.There`s no reason why the same bands should be played over & over again.

tdoc210 06-13-2006 08:48 PM

black metal pwnez

That's my point exactly. MTV made people lazy. They didn't have to go out and see their favorite bands, waiting months, sometimes years to get to spend a few hours with them. All they had to do was put it on, and there it was. MTV killed the magic of music. I remember my Mom telling me how she and her friends argued as to whether or not Elvis was black. They'd never seen him.

In the process, MTV directed the musical tastes of an entire generation, simply by playing the same stuff over and over. By the time MTV was 4-5 years old, in the mid 80's, MTV was pretty much dictating what was popular and what wasn't, simply because people were too lazy to find out for themselves. Not everyone, mind you. There are still, to this day, hardcore fans of 'real' music, who are ardent in their quest for good music. Like the people in here, MB. I'd say there are very, very few people in this forum that are swayed by what they see, as opposed to what they here.

But, for the most part, the majority of people are lazy, and eat whatever is fed to them. On the radio and on TV. MTV.

That's why I say MTV is the worst thing to happen to music. Being able to see music, on a daily basis, changed how it was recieved. The kids started dressing like Madonna, and MTV suddenly was a fashion show, with music an afterthought.

*EDIT* A perfect case in point to support this theory is a post I made in another thread. Look at what happened to metal when MTV came along. Anyone? Anyone?

Hair Metal. That's right. Suddenly, it was look good, then worry about the music.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-13-2006 10:04 PM

If it makes you feel any better, MTV doesn't play much music anymore

Uglycasanova 06-13-2006 10:42 PM

I think the whole publicity of music in general is ruining our generation. So many of these mainstream artists are horrible.

MURDER JUNKIE 06-13-2006 11:01 PM

We have done this to ourselves, because of downloading record companies have had to adapt aggressive marketing strategies. It will only get worse

ish 06-14-2006 01:34 AM

To me there are two things that have ruined music for everyone...Those being publicity just like Uglycasanova said AND the second being Pop music...I'm not talking about old ol pop I'm talking about the new age boy bands and single female artists and such. With there "oops I did it again's" and "bye bye bye's" And because when I was a 8 or something...That's what I listened to...Very sad as it may be

Alo 06-14-2006 05:56 AM

Hypes, yech.

swim 06-14-2006 06:02 AM

This has slightly been mentioned before but only in parts. The biggest problem in music is conforming media. Everyone says all the same stuff is great. The general population is completely oblivious to a lot of the music that we listen to.

You listen to the scene aesthetic...

shiftael 06-14-2006 10:31 PM

I vote for grunge, and boy bands... and toss off to the whiners, you can say whatever you want to say makes no matter to me, it's in my opinion... and yes, MTV these days does suck though once upon a time it actually used to be about music, no, really!

bungalow 06-14-2006 10:33 PM

The worst thing to happen to music is Bono. ;)

You're close but not quite there. Scenes kill music. Most grunge before the Nirvana boom is really really good. Look at Soundgarden imo their first two albums are their best. Being a scene has killed emo look at all these pop bands it's putting out mistakingly under its name.

I vote for britpop.

Nah, i vote for Michael Angelo Batio, Rusty Cooley and other musicians who think playing really fast random notes on a guitar just to impress can make up for horrible songwriting and a really inept sense of melody.

That is, assuming they even know what melody is.
