Muse write some damn catchy tunes.

One Word Extinguisher - Prefuse 73

Very strange stuff. Kind of like if Squarepusher did hip hop.

Muse have always been lame and derivative in the most negative sense imaginable, and I wouldn't be the first to point that out either. Also, if "catchiness" is somehow supposed to make up for glaring mediocrity in every other department, then I suppose you should pick up some of Forever The Sickest Kids and The Fray along with your most recent purchases, and only later lament that you didn't spend your $$$ on something a bit more substantial.

Anyway, some untarnished gems of the past I acquired recently-

Gong - You

Mirthrandir - For You the Old Women

Jane - Together

Progressive rock group from New Jersey in the late 70's. The music, instrumentally, is guitar/keyboard driven rock, with flute, sax and some jazz influences here and there which adds interesting textures to their overall sound. If I had to compare them to anyone, I'd say their reminiscent of Gentle Giant.

Also, the drumming, vocals (and the musicianship in general) are crazy good.

Unnecessary hostility ftw?

I simply said they write catchy music, not that they're some sort of amazing godsend of a band, because I agree they are rather generic. And I can assure you my music taste does not contain the likes of The Fray and Forever the Sickest Kids.

Well, rather than hostile, I was trying to be sarcastic. Lol, Guess Guess I should have put a smiley or something at the end...

My cousin (uggggggh) worships Muse, The Fray and Forever the Sickest Kids right now, so I thought mentioning them as suggested buys to see your reaction would be funny, since I can't think of anyone here on this forum who seriously likes either of the latter.

Somehow I found the compilation of 'Pitchfork Presents: 100 Best Tracks of 2008'... while I enjoy year-mixes AND Pitchfork, I only enjoy approximately 1/3 of the collection. Pitchfork has the well-known tendency to take the uber-pretentiousness of the music hipster to another level, and I must say, it culminates in their top 100. While I read the list online, the collection as an entire album is just absurd. The intention was to give a listen to some good music that I had missed this last year, and really, the only thing that I discovered via this album was some unknown hip-hop tracks that would have never popped onto my radar. Aside from that - kinda feels like walking into a restaurant that everyone tells you is great, the menu is supposed to be awesome, and the prices cheap - only to be abused by the wait-staff. This make any sense? Yeah... that's how it feels.
