Ugh, too lazy for pictures today. From the last couple weeks.

The recent adds:

Ultimate Horror Rock 'n' Roll Compilation
Diminished Men - Shadow Instrumentals
Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III of IV)
Thunderbirds Are Now! - Make History
Archive - Londinium
GNR - Defeitos Especiais (from Unchained Ballad)
The Great Tyrant - There Is a Man In the House (from Anteater)
The Witch Trials - The Witch Trials (from Clutnuckle)
A ton of Capcom stuff
New Japan Philharmonic - Smashing... Live!
Masato Nakamura - Sonic The Hedgehog Soundtrack
Misfits - Evillive II
Sonace - The Ultimate Result
Henry Rollins - Shock & Awe
Henry Rollins - Big Ugly Mouth (both from Bulldog)
Jellybean! - Breakfast Burrito and a Coffee To Go!
Jello Biafra - If Evolution Is Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Evolve
Justice - Productions & Remixes
Pictureplane - Turquiose Trail
Pictureplane - Dark Rift
One for the Team - Build It Up
Magrudergrind - Magrudergrind
HEALTH - HEALTH//DISCO2
The Chinese Stars - Heaven on Speed Dial
Leonard Nimoy - Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space
One for the Team - Ghosts
Jello Biafra - High Priest of Harmful Matter (from Bulldog)
Butthole Surfers - Peel Sessions
Boredoms - 77Boadrum

Albums that I used only have portions of that are now complete:

The Strokes - First Impressions Of Earth
Thunderbirds Are Now! - Justamustache
The Strokes - Is This It
The Strokes - The Modern Age EP
The Strokes - Room On Fire
Janie Jones - We're In Love With The World Of Janie Jones (from Paloma)
Butthole Surfers - Butthole Surfers + PCPPEP
Butthole Surfers - Hairway To Steven
The Evens - The Evens
Wire - Pink Flag
William Shatner - Has Been
Henry Rollins - Sweatbox
Elliott Smith - XO
Elliott Smith - New Moon
Elliott Smith - Roman Candle
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Butthole Surfers - Independent Worm Saloon
The Chinese Stars - Turbo Mattress EP
Butthole Surfers - Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac
Butthole Surfers - Electriclarryland

Sorry to make a big post that's only a list. A lot hasn't been listened to yet or much. Binging on the Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins spoken word stuff a lot this week, it was great to pass the time with at work. I'm pretty excited about the new HEALTH remix albumm and the Chinese Stars album I haven't heard. Evillive II was pretty bad. I'm a fan of both the Danzig and Graves era Misfits but Graves is pretty lousy live and really butchered Danzig's songs.

Nothing yet. A song from this album came up when listening to Fad Gadget radio on last.fm and it caught my attention.

Anathema-We're Here Because We're Here

Loved the Anathema. First listen to them ever, downloaded somewhat on a whim. Amazing atmospheric rock. Mixed by Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree and it's definitely audible. So good, will definitely be working my way back through their discography now.

Live Forever 06-01-2010 04:43 PM

Just listened to the "critically acclaimed" Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective.

Meh, it's alright and some of the melodies/production is pretty cool but what gives? Have of the songs barely have discernable beat, words, or even melody. Atmospherically a bit pleasing but I can't see this being considered the best album of 2009 by any stretch. Then again I'm not the biggest indie fan ever... I tend to prefer music with a steady rhythm, bassline, big chorus, etc.

Overall I appreciate them doing something different but for me it's like C to C+ album

It gets better with each listen. I couldn't stand it at first.. then I got into it and then got into some of their older stuff as well. Give it time and it should be a B+ at least. (Although I don't really get the A B C way of grading, I use numbers.)

Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quartet - Sepulcros De Miel

It is available for free (or rather, name your price) here. I haven't heard his last few, as he puts out too much stuff and it's hard to keep up, plus they can be pretty wanky.

One reviewer on RYM says, "Very reminiscent of early The Mars Volta albums. Highly recommended for fans of De-Loused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute, or psychedelic music in general." That's enough for me.

Nice, I'm only familiar with his very early solo stuff tbh. I quite like Cyborg from 1973 but it is undoubtedly a challenging listen with its 100 mins of minimalist, eerie, cold and unforgiving dronescapes.

noise 06-02-2010 03:55 AM

it gets a lot less experimental as the years go on. his newer stuff is really quite good judging from the little i've been able to check out since yesterday. more melodic, more modern...

so far though, my favorite has to be Body Love, an ambient porno soundtrack from 1977. now if i could only track down the actual video... :D

More melodic and modern is what came to mind when I watched that Mephisto video. And I had no idea he wrote a soundtrack for a porno - that's hilarious

It's interesting that you didn't start out with Solid Air. It's a wonderful album and definitely my favourite ever folk release. I love this verse from Don't Want to Know:

Yes, it's getting hard to listen
Hard for us to use our eyes
'Cause all around the gold is glistening
Making sure it keeps us hypnotised

As for Saxon, they're a bit dated and cheesy but if you don't mind that and you like NWOBHM then Wheels of Steel will be right up your alley. I still need to hear the new Deftones.

Mojo 06-02-2010 10:29 AM

Yeah im pretty sure i know what to expect from Saxon. Maybe nothing id fall in love with but they could be fun live. I dont think i would pay to go a gig of theirs so if theres no other band on at the same time that i really wanna see then ill probably use that opportunity to check them out. I would like to have heard a little more before i do that. If i like the compilation, i might well check out that album.

And as far as John Martyn goes, i started at the beginning. I usually do. I never got past the first two albums.

Such a great album. The Colbert bump really does work.

Mojo 06-02-2010 10:37 AM

I just gave it a listen. I dont like to judge albums upon their first spin but I enjoyed it. Presumably it can be classed, above all else, as a folk record but it was quite poppy in places too. It was a pleasant enough album to listen to for sure.

Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton
This band were staring at me for ages in my last.fm recommendations so i finally gave into them and downloaded this for free off their website. I'm certainly enjoying this, with their highly textured-sound comprised of Sonic Youth-esque guitars, complex rhythms and boy-girl vocals, and also an added sense of humour. Great stuff. I'll try and get around to their other albums and EPs in the not so distant future.

So you started with this album? It's great, to be sure...but I can't recommend "They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons" enough...sooooooo good. I know I've mentioned it a ton around here as well.

More people need to listen to the Swirlies.
