On first listen I already love this album

James 05-17-2010 01:53 PM

Is the new Saint Etienne any good?

I've only listened to 4 songs so far (have to hop off my laptop and get to studying) but I really enjoyed those four songs. If the rest of the album continues the trend it'll be a good one.

James 05-17-2010 02:01 PM

Right i'll get it then, they are awesome so I expected it to be good.

I ****ing love this album. Your first Sparowes ?

sidewinder 05-17-2010 04:13 PM

I'm not that guy, but I still haven't listened to any other Sparowes besides that one. I like it well enough, I think it just sometimes takes me a while to get into albums in that genre. Takes time for them to sink in, and I tend to let some time go by between listens.

I listened to their newest album randomly and decided to work my way through their earlier work.

If you have any recommendations for me to check out I'm all ears.

Downloaded this earlier today, was actually going to give it a spin tonight but made the mistake of putting Sleepyhead on first just to give myself an idea of what to expect. Sleepyhead is currently on repeat indefinitely. Might get to the rest tomorrow:thumb:

I love Sleepyhead, it's such a fun track. Little Secrets (I think it's called?) is also great.

At the Soundless Dawn is my fav Red Sparowes album and it certainly feels less homogenous than most post-rock. I guess it's the Jeff Caxide effect ;)

Anyhow, this is my latest acquisition as I promised I'd give Lady Gaga a chance. Can't say I've had a chance to listen to it though...

The Raveonettes - In and Out of Control
I like a lot of their earlier stuff and adore Lust, Lust, Lust. It's kind of overdo I picked this up.

Jose Gonzalez's 2007 album. He has a really unique (to me) sound. His cover of Massive Attack's Teardrops is amazing, it builds up to a point where I just feel enveloped by the sound. I find however, that the songs on this album are not consistent, there are many average tracks, as with his previous album Veneer. But yeah not bad.

I love that album for Teardrops, and although some of the songs on the album aren't that fantastic, Cycling Trivialities has to be my second fave on that album. I still dig the songs on it though. I can listen to it all day.

Band Of Horses - Infinite Arms
Listening to it now for the first time, enjoying it so far.

sidewinder 05-18-2010 11:57 AM

^ Today's the day, I need to either go pick it up or download it. Other new releases today I need to check out are The Black Keys' Brothers and Jamie Lidell's Compass.

Last night I got my first 2 downloads in 3 weeks, since my computer went to hell.

Sonic Youth - Sister
My second SY album. Just put it on now.

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image....L._AA300_.jpg

Coheed and Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow
Not expecting too much from this as I didn't really like the last one, but I used to be really into them so I'm at least curious.

Good choice right there, probably my second favourite Sonic Youth album. 'Schizophrenia' and 'Stereo Sanctity' are amazing songs :)

The Black Keys - Brother (2010)

I quite liked it, had a nice late '70's psychedelic vibe to it and had some great production on it to make it sound as if it was lo-fi, but not sound like crap.

http://www.iamtodd.net/wp-content/up...500_AA300_.jpg

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms (2010)

Their other two albums didn't really wow me in the ways I was told they would, but I still feel inclined to at least give it a try... plus my new editor asked me to review it...

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

The Sadies - Darker Circles (2010)

Holy crap is this ever some great alternative country... I know I really haven't heard much in the way of it this year but already this is my favorite. God damn Canada has some great musicians.

http://www.sedate-bookings.com/image...he%20North.jpg

.357 String Band - Lightning from the North (2010)

Wasn't even aware .357 String Band had a new album out this year, in any case it should rock the catbox.

Finally an album actually worth some of that artery clogging Pitchfork hype: fuckin' mindblowing pop-soul.

Mythos - S/T (1971)

Creepy, unusual Krautrock with some kickin' bass. Then again, is there really such thing as normal Krautrock from the 70's? =P

Archive - Controlling Crowds (2009)

Dunno why I only ever assumed only their first few albums were exceptional: this is just as trippy and awe-inspiring, if not moreso, than You All Look The Same To Me and Lights.

I like her a lot. Apart from being a redhead and therefore smoking hot by default, Jenny's a great songwriter - the work of hers I've heard reminds me a lot of Emmylou Harris (who is, of course, awesome). I've only got Under the Blacklight though, so I should have a bit more of a dig around her discography when I've got the time to.

My gf's a redhead, would have to +1 to that.
