Barbara Morgenstern - BM
Ordered this one again for the 3rd damn time. First, it couldn't be delivered (after a 1 month wait no less), then I got a badly scratched up copy that couldn't play past track 3. Third time's the charm!(?). Lady Gaga - Joanne Listened to it on Spotify way back when it was released. Found it disappointing, but I'm determined to give it a real second chance. At least the lead single was really infections in a great way. Suggested a slightly more raw take on her dance pop that the album sadly didn't deliver. Instead, it's a hodge podge of different styles of songs that all feel like imitations of other artists. Maybe when I get the CD, I can find a way to appreciate it for what it is - maybe even get more of a sense of the album having some identity of its own. In This Moment - Blood Not exactly the greatest band ever, but I think they're interesting, in that they're the only current metal band that manages to so aggressively fuse mainstream pop with metal with any sort of success. Amaranthe is the closest competitor in some ways, and they haven't figured this **** out in any way yet. In This Moment is starting to find something that could potentially become pretty awesome in a dumb sort of way. Guano Apes - Offline They totally "sold out" on their second last album, Bel Air, so I expect this one to be more radio friendly alternative pop rock in the same vein. I'm fine with that, really. As long as the song writing is on point, so I'm crossing fingers that it's perhaps a tad more consistent than Bel Air was (that album was super front loaded). |

Went a bit nuts with some cheap CD purchases recently:
Cæcilie Norby (Danish pop & jazz singer) So far, I'm digging her music. She's fairly eclectic in style and has a really nice and dynamic voice. Every one of the above albums have some songs that are pretty surprising when you've heard a lot of really boring vocal jazz albums (and I have). Didn't actually bother checking out St. Vincent's music until she put out her most recent album (which is not the one I got). I'm not 100% on board, but it's hard to not at least be a little impressed with the tight songwriting and her distinct guitar playing style. Never heard about this band before, but checking out the booklet and the back cover gave me good vibes somehow. I took a chance and it turned out to be a pretty cool blues rock/hard rock album. This song is just immortal: Working for the Enemy Darkness falls is an indie pop duo produced by Trentemøller. Not sure he's much of a name internationally, but he is here. Just took a chance and it's got some nice vibes. Need to check it out more though. So far, it's got some sleek, atmospheric, dark indie pop stylings going on. |

^That's only half of them. Got these on Amazon. Most of them are me taking a chance:
I wanted some more contemporary pop. Only heard very little of her music on Spotify and can't remember even how it sounded. I liked it at least somewhat, so I'm just choosing to take the dive. I was never that impressed with her in the past, but also never gave a close listen. I like a lot that's vaguely in this direction now, I guess, so it just seemed to make sense to take the chance. If her debut album was the best, then maybe this compilation of early recordings will capture some of that magic that she more or less lost after Relish? I've heard this one before. As far as I remember, it's no Relish, but still has some subtle traces left of what made her special. Gonna give it another shot. |
