My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

Yeah I'll admit it, this is a pretty ****ing good album all things considered.

Autolux - Demonstration EP

I couldn't find artwork for this, but oh well thems the breaks. It's pretty much the exact same as their debut LP, which isn't a bad thing, but does very little to assuage my impatience for their new album... which was suppose to come out in January

Burning Airlines - Mission: Controll

Didn't even come close to The Egg by Shiner but was good in it's own way, I think I'll give it another listen and if it fails to enthrall me I'll probably toss it.

According to the Grammys, "visual appeal" is acceptable criteria for deciding the merit of music.

I like this a lot. I have a couple of Shiner albums that I never really got into (Splay and Starless). Perhaps it's time to dig them up one of these days, or just check out The Egg instead.

Jimi Hendrix - Valleys of Neptune (2010)

Although not the legendary Hendrix goldmine the media is hyping it up to be, it's still finger-lickin' good on the ears.

Yes - 90125 [Expanded/Remastered] (1983)

An album I used to think was pretty meh before I realized how intricate it really is; even if they aren't being proggers, this still has a lot of Yessy qualities, and in terms of pop sensibility, 80's guitar aside, I think it holds up well today.

Joanna Newsom - Ys (2006)

Finding her 3rd album that came out this year rather charming, I backtracked four years and picked this up. A far cry from what most Indiefags listen to, and wonderfully evocative of Joni Mitchell and Renaissance back in prog. rock's golden days while still retaining a certain modern charm. Really, I wish I had picked this up a lonnnnnnng time ago.

Baroness/Unpersons "A Grey Sigh In A Flower Husk"

Been wanting to check out Baroness for a while, and Unpersons sounded interesting enough, so I thought I'd give this split a spin.

Wow, is this new-ish?

Alfred 03-07-2010 10:22 AM

It is from 2007. I guess that depends on your definition of new, haha.

Oh, and it was really good.

Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love

I'm enjoying this far more than some of their later releases. This album seems to have more experimentation and balls to it than their releases under their major label.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

M83 - Red Seas & Lost Ghosts

I listened to a few of the preview tracks by these guys on last.fm and felt it warranted a further listen. As I'm starting to overcome some of my misconceptions about shoegaze music I'm discovering some very good releases that I'm happy I'm finding sooner rather than later.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_W5FjEYwFGy...0/aplaceto.jpg

A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to Bury Strangers

I like heavy wall of sound distortion and this album delivers.

http://www.njarc.org/images/swirlies...tongue-aud.jpg

Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton

Someone (sorry I can't remember who) was talking about this band a week or two ago and that aroused my interest. Checked out a few demo songs and really found myself getting into the music so I found their highly regarded debut.

Ride - Nowhere

Another one of the original shoegaze bands from the late '80's/early '90's that I like. Some of the other bands I've been checking out (Slowdive, Chapterhouse, and Lush) have been a little too mellow and poppy for my taste. I love that heavy wall of distortion that I found with My Bloody Valentine's album Loveless and Ride's Nowhere delivers a very competent follow up.

Alfred 03-07-2010 12:45 PM

I'm putting these two 2009 metal albums up against eachother...

Baroness "Blue Record"
http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/wp-con...onesscover.jpg

Mastodon "Crack The Skye"
http://www.distantreverb.com/images/...k_the_skye.jpg

Based on past listening of both bands, Baroness is my favored to win, but my only other experience with Mastodon is Leviathan.

It's funny, those two albums went through a lot of back to back playing sessions with me last year.

LoathsomePete: great picks there, especially the Built to Spill and M83.

are you familiar with Cranes? shoegaze/dreampop at its best. can't recommend them enough.

It is one of my favorites. :thumb: More raw, honest, and fun than the others. Even if I still like the others a lot or equally, it's just different.

This popped up on my radar a few times recently, so I thought I'd check it out:

Jaylib - Champion Sound

Mastodon and Baroness are very similar for sure. Are there other bands that do the same sludgy progressive gruff singing metal thing as well?

Neurosis and Intronaut would be good places to go from there but in all truth and honesty you're going to be moving into more of a post-metal area which I can provide many recommendations for.

Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
Decided to give another Brand New album a try and see if I like it more than Your Favorite Weapon. I bought this for a girl when I was in grade 10.

http://webersmusic.files.wordpress.c...it-manners.jpg
Passion Pit - Manners
They seemed to be getting some positive feedback last year and the mashup of the song 'Sleephead' I have interested me enough to download this.

Deerhoof - Dirt Pirate Creed

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/174s/23981119.png
Deerhoof - The Return of the Wood M'Lady
A couple more additions to my Deerhoof collection. This is their earliest and noisiest material.

High on Fire's Death is This Communion is also a great album in that ballpark. For what it's worth their new album Snakes for the Divine which came out a couple weeks ago was an utter disappointment.

LoathsomePete 03-07-2010 01:09 PM

You think so? I mean it's certainly no Surrounded By Thieves but it had enough to get my head banging and some desk drumming going on.

It has a lot to live up to, but my faith in Damon is steadfast and I expect great things.

Make sure you brew yourself a pot of tea and make a sandwich, it's a very long album.

It definitely merits another listen. I think I was a little impatient that a lot of the songs gradually work their way into the brutality that I'm so accustomed to.

Alfred 03-07-2010 01:18 PM

Thanks for the suggestion Satch. I'll get on that as well.

Bulldog 03-07-2010 01:57 PM

Scritti Politti - Early

http://www.roughtraderecords.com/ima...8869.jpg&w=300

A Rough Trade compilation of Scritti's earlier, post-punk/experimental-type stuff. I've heard the odd song off it here and there, but never really bothered trying to get this album myself 'til today.

Earwig - Under My Skin I Am Laughing

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EjxbH8HKTW...m-Laughing.jpg
And this is some dream-pop/shoegaze-afflicted album that a paragraph-long description on some blog aside, I have no idea what it'll sound like.

scottsy 03-07-2010 02:32 PM

Gots me a couple of downloads of the last two Jarvis Co cker albums, courtesy of Bulldog... am most satisfied to receive them!

High on Fire!

I have listened to it once and was not at all disappointed which probably means that I will love it.

Oh, and I agree with whoever said Plastic Beach sucks (wait, was that only me?) but I'm pretty excited about High on Fire. Hopefully after another listen or two I'll be inspired to write more about it.

^ The Cult are awesome, a great bridge in the gap between 1970s guitar rock and new wave bands. I don't really like Electric though, by that point they were well into the glam metal phase of their career & the production makes it sound horribly dated. Still top notch band though, they reformed a couple years ago and put out a new album since then.

A lot of die hard Cult fans dislike Electric and I can completely understand that, as the previous album Love is a classic but there is something about that album that I love. The utter simplicity of it and I personally love the production of the album. Superb drum sound even if the album was dated even back then in '87. It is a guilty pleasure.

OMFG. I wish I still smoked weed, this would be perfect. Pink Floyd's Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun with a couple of heavy riffs here and there is a good summation of the album. Stoner Rock without the cliched riffs but all the atmosphere=win.

I'm right there with you on this. I think it's just because I wore the **** out of the album...probably around the same time you were , so it's a great album for me by association alone.

Alcest - Écailles de Lune (2010)

Looks like the Album of the Year leaked a bit earlier than expected. And yes, it's really really really fucking good.

LoathsomePete 03-07-2010 08:52 PM

Ok so I just checked out that artist on last.fm and I'm super confused because the tags say that it's: Shoegaze, black metal, and post-rock. All different styles of music. What would you say it is?
