If you want to start with Riverside, I recommend their first album Out of Myself. It's more catchy than the new one Anno domini. But lot of people say Anno Domini is their best because it's probably LITTLE BIT heavier and it has 5 longer tracks. Quote:
But @LoathsomePete... you have probably very open-minded grandma  My grandma wouldn't be able to survive one song :D Ok, I am girl, I don't need too heavy stuff and I always say they are something like progressive rock/metal and not only metal. |
|
I gotta say, that is one of the coolest album covers I have seen in a while...

The Smiths - Meat Is Murder (1985) Got this classic in FLAC and converted to 320 kbps, resulting in an awesomeness that sounded better than the copy I had before. http://geordierussell.instone.net/Ju...laderunner.jpg Vangelis - Blade Runner OST (1994) My new favorite background music to a 2:00 AM drive through the city when everything is dark, strange and desolate. |

I have a huge soft spot for Poison Girls, their singer being a housewife-turned-anarcho singer/guitarist |

Bought on Saturday for a three spot. Not the best compilation ever but great to have some of her music on hard copy. Sinnerman is such a fantastic track. |

Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas My Mom came to visit and she bought me some albums :) http://img.noiset.com/images/album/a...art-47825.jpeg Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album Finally got the whole thing. I think Milkman was the first Aphex Twin song I ever heard years ago on a David Firth animation. http://www.pastemagazine.com/article...07_300x300.jpg Jay Reatard - Singles 06-07 It came with a live DVD which is always a bonus. |

I do have a soft spot for Interpol, though. |
"Humbug" - Arctic Monkeys. "Crying Lightning" is one hell of a single. That and "Wild Young Hearts" by the Noisettes. Similarly, a very strong album with a great single, "Never Forget You".
Strongly reccomend both, though they couldn't be any more dissimilar stylistically. |
Grabbed these on cd:
Kenny Barron and Regina Carter - Freefall http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Got this mainly cause I enjoy Kenny Barron immensely, but Carter is excellent on violin here as well. Piano + violin can sound so haunting on here at times, but also quite exciting in others. Very cool all around. Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra - Unza Unza Time http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Had to pick this up after seeing it mentioned in a couple different spots on MB, and then hearing a song by them on the Feb comp. Extremely fun and also noisy, and just loaded with bright brass sounds. This album just f*cking rocks. Chansons Et Musiques Des Films Noirs http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg Actually came across this by accident, but it was cheap and I liked the cover so I snagged it. Some slow, moody theme songs like you'd expect, but also some tunes that are more upbeat that sound like Sinatra would maybe sing if he was french. Not too bad. :) |

Opium Cartel - Night Blooms (2009) Like a lot of you here, I'm generally picking up new stuff all the time. Upon obtaining an album and giving it some serious time, one of three feelings results: like, dislike, or meh. Rarely do I fall in love with albums at first listen. Sometimes it never happens at all. For the first time in a long time however, spring has sprung for me here, an album that came out in the middle of last year but nobody seemed to notice. Probably because the musicians involved are all prog. guys from Sweden and Norway even though the music here is generally NOT proggy at all. And perhaps such is for the best, because what they've accomplished here is a hell of a lot better than their careers in modern progressive rock. Musically there's a lot happening. There's a shoegaze aesthetic that also feels a bit like old school alt. rock, a fair amount of folk, some slight metal touches, delicious classical, a lot of organic instrumentation..all which is held together in the core by subtle electronic touches that shiver in blissful, flawless nirvana. The vocals also do this music the best service possible, as both the male and female sound wonderful in their respective leads. I know you guys generally don't take my suggestions, but this here is essential. I've even upped a few tracks to back up my assertions! |
^ Wow, that's not bad at all. Might have to look that album up later.

There isn't any pictures of it.. but oh well. It's pretty much like Brenoritvrezorkre! Loud, indiscernible instruments that all come together in such a way that make you feel uncomfortable. I love the vocals |

That, and I already love the band's name and that album cover. For some odd reason, I'm a sucker for mostly white album covers. It does something weird for me, and I approach the music differently. |

Pretty much certain that I will love it Forgot to add the name, it's a bit small : Akira Kosemura - Polaroid Piano |
