BIG FKN GUN—Pop Models EP
Futuristic, dubby, electronic hip hop from South Africa. This album lives up to its awesome cover art. Rapping comes at you in English and Zulu and maybe some other languages as well, I'm not sure, but I do know that this is some great late, late night music with a style that's pretty unique to my ears.

Sample track:

I'm halfway through listening to this and I'm enjoying it so far.

I always liked the Scott Walker and Okkervil River covers of Black Sheep Boy, but I'd never heard the original. And somehow Tim Hardin has largely slipped under my radar, so I've been wanting to check this out for a while.

Okmalumkoolkat—Holy Oxygen I EP
Another really good South African hip hop album with a strong IDM influence. Digging it.

Publicist UK - Forgive Yourself (2015)
Dark post-punk meets post-metal. Think White Light from the Mouth of Infinity-era Swans if they allowed themselves to be influenced by metal. Some good stuff, interested in hearing what they do next.

Baroness - Purple (2015)
I was unimpressed by Yellow & Green and I'm also unimpressed by this. I find vocal style that John Baizley has developed over the past couple of albums to be irritating. Red Album was a solid debut but I don't like the direction they've taken since then.

^ never really been that impressed with Baroness tbh (haven't heard their newest tho). Donno what it is, ive tried enough times that I think im out for good tho.

Im currently listening to:

Blackened Fawns Cleanse the Earth With Fire by The Mausoleums

noisey, black metal-tinged acid rock I guess. The kind of guitar wankery that I actually enjoy, but in fairness it's probably because the rest of it sounds like pop music heard through a washing machine. aka it's very good. Ninetales seal of approval.

After repeatedly encountering the album on the RYM top list for ambient recordings I finally took the time this evening to take in Edward Artemiev's score to Andrey Tarkovsky's Russian film, Солярис (Solaris) from 1972.

10 minutes in I was locking in my order for the sealed copy of the licensed 2013 gatefold 180g reissue.

The album is a masterful blend of experimental noise and Bach's Ich ruf' zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ. The score's eerie drones and haunting reverberations transport the listener into the lonely isolation of outer space. It makes for a magnificent listening experience.

Loved the score to the movie while I was watching it but I never really went to the album itself. Have you seen the film? Some dated cgi at the end, but it's a great film.

I'm snagging a copy to watch in the days ahead. The score stands quite well on its own for listeners who enjoy Pierre Schaeffer or early Schulze.
