Ok finished it. And all of this is based off just one listen but here goes
Ill start by saying I liked it. Didnt love it though. One thing that immediately stuck out to me was how you were saying that the singer was so much better than Carly, which I found to be the total opposite. She sounds like a higher pitched version of the Joy Formidable chick, and I think towards the end of this album I found her grating on me. That being said, my favorite tracks are "Never Ending Circle", "Keep you on My Side" and "Empty Threat" but those were spaced between songs I either was pretty indifferent to ("Leave a Trace", "Clearest Blue") or thought were just flat out bad ("Make Them Gold" - ugh this one I nearly had to skip). Wasnt too keen on the male vocal song either, but I can maybe see myself liking it with more listens. Also was expecting this to be more catchy than it is, and even as Im listening to some songs again, they still arent really sticking. I also dont really see the similarities to EMOTION other than being synth pop, as I think they are going for totally different aesthetics. Weird that I would call Every Open Eye a more sugary album (I mean that was Carly's whole shtick right?), so maybe its more similar to Kiss in that regard. So in conclusion: it's good, not great. Ill probably listen to it again, though it doesnt feel like a grower but rather something Id come back to for certain songs instead of the full thing. And no it's not better than EMOTION. |

Emotion is not even in the same universe in terms of quality, it's like a 5.5 vs at least a 9.5
And I think you're the only person I've ever seen that had anything other than glowing praise for Lauren's voice Weird that you were indifferent on Leave a Trace and Clearest Blue. Also weird you liked Empty Threat but disliked Make Them Gold, those are very similar to me

haha that's maybe how id see the scores too but reversed (not really id probably put Chvrches at a 6 maybe 7)
Idk her voice doesnt seem that interesting or new to me. Not saying Carly's is either, but really dont know how Chvrches "stands out" so to speak. "Make Them Gold" was just cringey as hell. Not terribly interesting and god that chorus line was just blech. But it was the only song Id call bad on the album. The album reminded me of that Sunny Day in Glasgow album from last year; not in terms of sonic similarities, but just albums I liked but wanted to love more. |
