Every few months, I put on some kind of metal/grindcore/etc type album to see if my tastes have evolved. Not yet. I still hate this. I find it disturbing and not beautiful, which I think is its goal. But that goal is not my goal in listening to music. I want my music to be pleasant and beautiful and a bit trippy.

This, however, is one of my favorite artists. So beautiful and cosmic! A genius on the violin and with trippy studio tricks.

Kairon; IRSE! - Ujubasajuba

Saw this on the frontpage of RYM, some reviewer called it "brutal post-rock". The killer album cover caught my attention, so I thought I'd download it. It's on Bandcamp for free, guys.

EDIT: A couple of tracks in, and it's flippin' amazing so far.

Soen - Tellurian (2014)

I swear this band exists for no reason other than to goad Tool into releasing a new album. Still, they're mostly harmless and out of all the Tool knock-offs they're probably the best.

Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel (2014)

I remember their debut album being somewhat of an indie darling, but honestly I can't remember much about it and I haven't gone back and listened to it since. This one seems to be along the same trajectory, but still, if I slogged my way through Agalloch's new album I suppose I can do the same for this.

Bloodbath - Grand Morbid Funeral (2014)

Easily the album from the bunch I'm most excited for. I'm very interested in how the musical aspect is going to adapt to Nick Holmes' singing style, or if he's going to try and do the death metal guttural voice. Either way I'm going to save this one for last.

Always? There aren't times when you're in the mood for something else?

Finally caved and bought a rather expensive copy of In the Court of the Crimson King for tape mountain.

Not always. Sometimes I'm in the mood for something different. But so far I'm never in the mood for black metal or grindcore.

I do, however, keep an open mind about music, which is why I'll test the waters now and again. Pig Destroyer, for example, would be--in my opinion--excellent if he never opened his mouth. The microphone-munching screaming ruins those superb guitars and drumming.

I've never heard of them, but that reminds me a friend in Texas posted an Instagram clip of a show he saw, the band is called Toology. The guy was painted blue and moving about the stage like Maynard. I asked, "Is that a Tool coverband? Isn't it a bit odd to have a cover band when the band is still together?" But it is Tool, and while they may be touring, they're only "technically" still active. According to my friend, this band plays the songs Tool fans want to hear, and Tool keeps playing the same setlists all the time. I wouldn't mind checking them out if they came around here.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Pictures at an Exhibition (1971)

Nah. To me, this is just a prog rock curiosity. It's well done, of course, but it doesn't speak to me.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Pika Pika Fantajin (2014)

Frak me. I think I might need to listen to some more grindcore now.

Nice singer-songwriter tunes. Beautiful.

Shlohmo - Places (2011)

Very groovy experimental electronica. Like the way he halfway sings his eh ehs across the track. Swam through this album.
