I was on a plane pretty much all day yesterday, nothing but hip-hop. It was great.

El-p - Cancer 4 Cure

Extremely forward-thinking, almost futuristic sounding hip-hop. El-p's becoming one of my fave MC's.

YC The Cynic - Gnk

I'm not quite sure if it's a mixtape or a full-length, either way it's a great record with great conscious hip-hop.

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

Experimental, jazzy, ethereal hip-hop. This is a challenging record, but it hit me hard one day.

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2

Much, MUCH more abrasive than RTJ, the details in these beats could only come from El-p. Killer Mike tears this up, but it is El-p that steals this record.

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels

Still brutal, but opting for that "adventurous" sound. Treading somewhat melodic territory, and certainly not as hardcore as RTJ2.

Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2

So I guess there's been this trend in hip hop with these really deep, heavy, brutal acts like Death Grips and RTJ here lately. It's a hell of a lot different than all the Nujabes I've been listening to lately lol but it's pretty cool overall. Definitely good but I wouldn't say great, I should listen to more albums like this though

best melvins I say

I love Psychic Hearts but the last couple of song oriented TM records didn't really do it for me. I am looking forward to The Best Day though.

It's funny - I guess the only way we're going to come close to a new SY fix is to put Thurston, Lee and Body/Head albums on shuffle play. Maybe on the next Body/Head record, they'll ask Steve to play drums just to be consistent. I will miss SY though. They've been in my life for over 30 years! Hopefully they'll reform for a nice dissonant Senior Citizens jam at some point.

Pickin's were kinda slim and that is a drag because Amoeba is one of the very few retailers we have left in these parts. I keep hearing that this vinyl boom is causing records to be so expensive, there is just no margin of profit for the retailers. That's another thread though.

Alice Coltrane - A Monastic Trio - Brand new re-release of Alice's debut solo record. One of her absolute best!

Oh my gosh that sounds amazing. I love Alice. She was a really exemplary example of how jazz can almost become a spiritual exercise. I love the way she incorporates those beautiful, heavenly harp sounds into the music. I'll definitely be checking this out.

And speaking of jazz...

I've listened to this countless times, but I'm reading his autobiography and hearing about how he actually made the record really got me in the mood to listen again with fresh ears. As always, it's incredible. Funky, groovy, and I really only just now appreciate how ground breaking and important it was, and still is. I'll probably be listening to much of his discography in the coming days.

Oh I'd be so tempted to agree. Fantastic album, rather underplayed in my library compared to some of their other releases - I always forget just how good it is.
