Summer Vacation- local heroes and one of my favorite current emo bands broke up recently. Turns out they had a side project- Winter Break. Turns out Winter Break actually kick ass.

"Suckin Ass at Pinball" is a sloppy, treble-y, jangly mess of down-trodden, anxiety-ridden emo-pop-punk goodness. Download it here:

No Youth by Wreck and Reference

not as amazing as their album from this year (one of the absolute best of the year so far PS), but still pretty great. Plus it's free so why not

Went down to an independent music store today, since the chain CD stores are so overpriced that it should be illegal.

James - Pleased to Meet You
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
Nirvana - Incesticide
Anthrax - Among the Living
Otis Redding - Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul

The guy at the counter complimented the variety, that was kind of cool. Also, my mother and sisters went on a one-day shopping trip earlier this week, and I asked if they could look for cool CDs at cool CD stores. They said they would look for some metal, and I got these:

Ill Niño - One Nation Underground
Nightrage - Sweet Vengeance

The first one turned out to be nu metal. Didn't exacly become a favourite. Haven't listened to the second one yet, so I have my hopes up. You know, it's actually kind of fun not knowing whether or not that new album you're getting/buying/stealing from a blind person is going to be crap.

Funny, you mention them. I just picked up their new album but haven't listened to it yet. I really liked their latin spin on certain songs and appreciated them for it. I remember enjoying a few singles from them back in the day but haven't touched their newer material yet.

Till Death, La Famalia just came out.

^ I found a Pennywise album at the store, but decided not to buy it because it wasn't part of the "buy 5" discount. I guess I'm pretty... pennywise.

Triunity by Blut aus Nord / P.H.O.B.O.S.

new split album featuring one of my favorite bands ever (BaN fyi). In secret I do sometimes wish they would go back to their Ultima Thulee days of frostbitten black metal, but i still do like their newer, more mechanical sound. Their half of this album really isnt a surprise for those familiar with their 777 trilogy as it is more of the same (not necessarily a bad thing). I'm only partially through PHOBOS' half, but they have more of a spacier or industrial sound to them. The drums in particular are very cool. All in all im obviously enjoying it but i cant help and wear my rose colored glasses when listening to new BaN and pine for the early Vindsval days. Still though, Memoria Vetusta III could still be coming out this year, and that series is truly amazing so im excited for that.

Unreleased 70's Porno Music - Pornosonic (2004)

From the AllMusic review...

If the smiling visage of smut film icon Ron Jeremy that adorns the cover of PornoSonic isn't in and of itself enough to convince you to buy the record, then you need to seriously recalibrate your value system -- the Hedgehog is a veritable trademark of quality, and one listen to this collection of vintage porn music will no doubt prove enough to keep you coming back for more. These ten instrumentals are from the classic "boom-chicka-pow-wow" school of skinematic debauchery, loaded with funky drums, bone-rattling basses, and guitars that squeal and moan like starlets in heat -- best of all, the esteemed Mr. Jeremy contributes spoken material guaranteed to keep the ladies in the mood. Highlights include such theme songs as "Laying Pipe," "Sex Starved Secretaries," "Cramming for College," and "Prepare for Take Off."

The last album I bought was Magic Mountain by Black Stone Cherry. Although it was an improvement on Between the Devil & The Deep Blue Sea I still found myself slightly disappointed. The proposed return to a more stripped-down and dirty Southern rock, saturated with 70s influence was actually a bit hit-and-miss. "Hollywood in Kentucky" was astoundingly embarrassing, though "Fiesta del Fuego" and "Blow My Mind" were pretty cool.

Will they ever top the consistency, confidence and rock and/or roll brilliance of Folklore and Superstition? Probably not.....probably not....
