Marianne Faithfull - Broken English



Impressive! I love a lot of her 60's Pop hits, but this is her true classic. With 1969's "Sister Morphine" hinting at the greatness within her, there was a decade long wait for people to hear a new street-wise Marianne that built up on the promise of that song and fitted in perfectly with what was happening at the time with a lot of experience giving serious weight to the lyrics. The version of Dr. Hook's "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" is another case of the cover winning over the original enough to be the definitive. No dreams to be found here!


Simple Minds - Empires and Dance



A ultra fine album from their early years, with a style of lettering that was also used on Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible. Although "I Travel" is a solid Dance classic, most of the songs here are not in the style of what most people know them for. The only trouble in really getting into this album is in the usually clumsy lyrics, but other than that getting the vinyl was worth it!

Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain


One of the few examples of good 80's Big Pop although with a bloated cover (the victim - Lou Reed's classic "Street Hassle"), this was a memory I had to bring back into my collection once more to hear if it holds up - and it does despite most of it's style turning into the big cliches of the decade in general. Most of the music here had tasty hooks by the baker's dozen and a young Screen did not even get the hint that things were going to go wrong in the near future, but I still like most of it. This was a case where the commercial aims were more perfect for the band than the slightly experimental beginnings. Brings back some good memories.

Can't say I've gone back and listened to Vol. 1 and 2 much since 2009, but I'm always down for some new CunninLynguists.

^wow thanks I had no idea they were even releasing another album. Love their last two. Maybe I should check the Strange Journey mixtapes first as I haven't heard them to this point.

Volume 1 is pretty on par with their LPs in terms of quality and I can't say I really gave Volume 2 much of a listen. Volume 3 comes somewhere in the middle with me, there's enough that warrants a second look, but I might not do it right way. The track with Sadistik and Aesop Rock was pretty dope though.

This is so good. It is awesome to hear someone with better lyrical skill rap over those beats.

I remember hearing about Jon Connor at the BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher but I completely forgot about him afterwards.

Weirdly enough I haven't listened to anything they've done since the Barrel Of Batteries EP, but my brother recommended this and I decided I should re-visit them.

The EP they made under s / s / s really grew on me over multiple listens, and I streamed this in advance and really liked it, not surprising though since I like Serengeti and I like Sufjan.

Leonard Cohen Complete Studio Albums Collection

Just ordered this 11 CD set (at a great price) as I only have his best-of on vinyl.

I saw the tracks in your signature last night and was hoping you liked it. Its way better than his Jay-Z/Eminem projects (raps over their instrumentals too).
