Moar musics...
TOY - TOY (2012) Still trying to wrap my head around this one, neo-psych, post-punk, krautrock, I don't know. There are a few standout tracks but the rest needs more time to sink in. New War - New War (2012) Enjoying this Australian art/post-punk album, works well as an album with good variation between tracks. I've only played it twice so far and look forward to more. One track in particular reminded me of Wilderness and early Killing Joke combined, but I wouldn't say that's the case for the entire album. Beak> - >> (2012) Post-punk and krautrock, an overall enjoyable and somewhat challenging album with a few immediate standouts. µ-Ziq - Chewed Corners (2013) His first since 2007's Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique, and a sharp contrast to that one's bleak landscape. I enjoyed several songs, and wonder how I'll feel about the album after a few more listens. Mike Paradinas has some classic stuff and is definitely a legend, but he's never been all that consistent either. Hexvessel - No Holier Temple (2012) Now this is something very interesting. I've heard a few songs from here on my Spotify playlist of things I need to check out, and they've been impressive. The overall vibe here is Psychedelic Folk or Neofolk, but you could also easily call it Progressive Folk. It's funny that the vocalist at times reminds me of Maynard James Keenan, in his softer voice. The track "His Portal Tomb" sounds like a cross between Tool and Black Sabbath. The riff is Sabbath, but it never goes all metal or anything. It stays folky. I like this, and recommend this. Finnish band, English vocals. Also, RYM now embeds larger images in links! You still have to copy/paste the code they provide after you click the album cover on the album page, though.

The Hexvessel album is fantastic. I second the recommendation for anyone who likes Psych-folk. I think anyone who likes a variety of prog-rock sounds would enjoy it as well. |

Crisis "Holocaust Hymns" I'm seeing DIJ in a few months, and I hadn't ever really listened to Crisis, the leftist punk outfit that housed future members of Sol Invictus and Death In June. I'm just amazed at how fucking weird this whole thing is. How do you go from Anarchist ultra-left wing punk (a la Crass), to an almost parody of right-wing white nationalists? I just don't know what to think, and if I should feel bad for listening to it all. Autechre "LP5" I heard "Rae" via link, and was searching through my library looking for it just to see if it went ignored. Turns out I didn't have it, so here it is. |

Finally getting caught up with this year's new album. Got my hands on:
Children of Bodom - Halo of Blood Tessaract - Altered State Rob Zombie - Venemous Rat Regeneration Vendor Iron & Wine - Ghost on Ghost Megadeth - Super Collider Some that I have already had the pleasure of enjoying from this year: Sigur Ros - Kveikur: Fantastic release, really happy with how it turned out, however I find myself enjoying Valtari and Takk a little bit more, still. City & Colour - The Hurry & The Harm: Love it. Love love love it. I remember when Little Hell was released and how impressed I was; same exact reaction to this album. Dallas Green always delivers. Streetlight Manifesto - The Hands That Thieve: Not a terrible album, but didn't leave much of an impression. Black Sabbath - 13: Really enjoyed it, though I think they tried a little hard at times to make it sound like it came from the 70's. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories: Still feels new. I can listen to it and still get goosebumps related to the first listen goosebumps. Bullet For My Valentine - Temper Temper: By far the worst release of this year. I was expecting at least a little bit of effort even though this band has always been known to be bad, it just seems like they barely tried with this one. Killswitch Engage - Disarm The Descent: One of my top 5 of 2013. So much energy, power, and heavy metal all combined into one fantastic release. Really happy with how it turned out since I had very high expectations for it. That's all i've been able to get through so far, but there are still a large number of albums that I still need to get around to listening to. This year is actually turning out to be a very good year for music. |
