Bibio - Silver Wilkinson (2013) This album starts out very mellow, probably for the first 3 tracks and it's quite surprising not to hear any vocals, especially considering some of the material on 2011's Mind Bokeh and even 2009's Ambivalence Avenue. But Mind Bokeh had particularly up-front vocals that indicated he was going for a more mainstream appeal, so it's interesting to hear the new album start out this way. And while vocals are present on the album, the whole thing feels far more mellow than the last two, perhaps more appropriately positioned between Vignetting the Compost and Ambivalence Avenue. This is good news, as I thought about half of Mind Bokeh was overblown and cheesy. That said, Ambivalence Avenue is my favorite so I almost wish it was a little bit more engaging, though there are several engaging tracks once you get past the first few. Certainly a good album for spring and summer.

Picked up this indie/twee pop album after seeing them live. They're much better live than on album, as they're noisier and a bit rougher. This isn't a great debut, they can probably do better, but their guitar/vocalist is so pretty I don't even care. Exhibit A. |

Gojira—L'Enfant Sauvage I've been checking out a few things lately that are on my list of "stuff a lot of MB people seemed to like a lot which I never got around to". This is one of those albums and one of those bands. It's my first exposure to these guys, and even though I'm only three songs in, I think I'm already won over. This is fucking fantastic. Powerful, precise, violent, almost beautiful and... I don't know... heartfelt. It seem a weird way to describe it but it's true. It's like everything I like about Meshuggah, High on Fire and Pelican all rolled into one. Loving it. |

It's out!? This is one of the few albums I was actually going to buy because I appreciate they're a small band and will need encouragement to stop them going the way of most emo bands. I can buy it on Bandcamp, yeah? Or do I have to go via the bands website?
