This has been a great weekend for free music, especially if you like your heavy psych, space-rock, doom metal and stoner rock. Firstly Earthless and White Hills made a free split EP available through the Scion Label Showcase.
And thanks to the wonderful people at Burning World records, I have been taking advantage of some of the stuff that has been made available through their Bandcamp, including, mainly, a selection of the brilliant "Live at Roadburn' series of recordings from the Dutch stoner rock and psychedelic festival. They are a steal. Literally. They are all currently being offered on 'Name Your Price' starting at zero. CONAN I had heard this one and still rather fancy the LP but a free download will certainly suffice for now YOB BONGRIPPER WINO WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM CHURCH OF MISERY There is also a 'Year of No Light' one I haven't gotten yet, but I might check it out. Sadly the Ulver one is not available on Name Your Price but you canh stream it and there are also two available that I already have which are: BONG Both of which are spectacular and should be downloaded immediately. |

^ Some interesting picks you have there. I will have to check some of those out.
I have 'Sonic Prayer' by Earthless and it's one of my favorite instrumental heavy psych albums. |

That's a great record and even though I would probably say I preferred White Hills, the Earthless track on that EP is the better track.
As for the others I posted, I would recommend Bong and White Hills to anyone. If you like that Earthless record then I would say you stand a good chance of getting into those, especially White Hills. I wouldn't recommend the Conan record as a starting point for that band. I would recommend getting the album 'Monnos' first and then getting the live one, if you were considering it. The live one doesn't quite capture the brilliance of their live sets but it IS very good. Get to know the band first though. |

The Night Marchers - Allez! Allez! (2013) Streaming this on Spotify, been meaning to listen since it came out in January. For those unaware, this is the second album from the latest garage punk band fronted by John Reis of Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt, etc. I feel like I didn't give their debut enough attention so I should probably revisit soon. I think they're both produced rather well, and this is sounding good so far.

Milk Music - Cruise Your Illusion (2013) I checked out their EP from last year which was ok but sounded too much like wannabe Dinosaur Jr. and Mudhoney. Still I was interested to see where they'd go next. I was impressed with some nice and mellow guitar playing on the first track (an instrumental), and there has been some really nice guitar work throughout. But the vocalist still sounds like he's trying too hard to be J. Mascis or Mark Arm. Cool album title and cover though. I'll keep the album in rotation as I did enjoy the music, maybe I'll get over the vocals.

Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution—A Call to Arms I have no idea how I missed this when it came out back in 2001 but this is a fantastic little EP. This group is connected to Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto so I assume it's somewhat well known, but the music here is a different animal than what you'd expect given the pedigree. To some extent it's written like poppy ska-punk music, but it's played by a fairly large acoustic ensemble that transforms the material into a gorgeous big band/classical/latin/gypsy hybrid. My only complaint is that this is all they've ever released. My favorite track: |

Merchandise - Totale Nite (2013) Still a definite Manchester influence here, with vocals reminiscent of Morrissey but a little less so than on last year's Children of Desire, perhaps. Maybe it's just that I was expecting it. No disappointment here so far, but I don't know if it'll contain songs as epic as the two stand-outs from last year. It feels more consistent though, Children of Desire had a few duds. Yeah, this is impressive but I may be wrong about the vocals, Morrissey is definitely still there. I'm not complaining though.
