Young Magic - Melt: Really solid neo-psychedelia album, reminds me of Yeasayer's All Hour Cymbals, but I find myself preferring this to their work. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s4037158.jpg Jessie Ware - Devotion: I was expecting something like Lana Del Rey, but I enjoyed this a great deal more than Born to Die (which was ****e). Plenty of variation in beat over the album. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s4190157.jpg Crystal Castles - III: Thought this was great, and a step above either I or II. I particularly enjoyed the contrast of Insulin heading into Transgender. Happy with this. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s4159627.jpg Harouki Zombi - Objet Petit A: Short little EP from Kevin Barnes' wife Nina, and Rebecca Cash. Promising electropop. Needs some fine tuning, but this act has potential. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s4045690.jpg Thee Oh Sees - Putrifiers II: Feel a bit neutral about this, as half the album was great, but the remaining tracks were somewhat forgettable. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s3979657.jpg Guided By Voices - The Bears For Lunch: Hmmm, meh. Some good moments, but does mostly little for me. Guided By Voices try to do too much on every album without giving the really great stuff time to shine. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s4108833.jpg Grouper - Violet Replacement II: I love Liz Harris. She could murmur me to sleep every night, honestly. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s3949987.jpg DIIV - Oshin: Pretty run of the mill dream pop/shoegaze. Nothing new here. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s3944810.jpg Big Blood - Old Time Primitives: Least favourite Big Blood album so far, but still has some greatness to it. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...s/s3944992.jpg A Place to Bury Strangers - Worship: Pretty good, but Exploding Head was better. |

Peter Brotzmann Trio - For Adolphe Sax Great free jazz, and I would expect nothing less from Brotzmann. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Sun-Ra-FOUR-C...viw~~60_35.JPG Sun Ra - Four Classic Albums (Includes Jazz By Sun Ra, Jazz Silhouette, The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra, Supersonic Jazz, as well as singles) Awesome boxset that only cost ten bucks. It's mostly early Sun Ra, from fifties to sixties. The singles are cool too, because I haven't listened to any of his doowop music, and it's decent. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...s-Big_Time.jpg Tom Waits - Big Time Got the movie and the soundtrack for this one, and what a bloody fantastic record this is. Almost all of the songs are right on par with the album versions or better. The movie's pretty awesome if you haven't seen that as well. http://static.rateyourmusic.com/albu...24/1591573.jpg Kaoru Abe - Also Dream of the Day http://i.ytimg.com/vi/YZsEHsRW54A/0.jpg Kaoru Abe - Winter 1972 http://www.soundohm.com/album-covers...h-1970-psf.jpg Kaoru Abe - 1970 In March, Shinjiku Three albums by Kaoru Abe (the man in my avatar) that I got in my stocking this year. Improvisational jazz, primarily on solo alto saxophone. He primarily explores textures in his work, and he's one of my favourites. I haven't listened to them yet, but I doubt that I'll be disappointed. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...No_Gijinka.jpg Keiji Haino - Tenshi No Gijinka An interesting one from Keiji Haino, as I've only heard his guitar and a capella works. It's percussion and vocals, far more ambient than his more abrasive noise work. Haino manipulates each object that he uses on the album in a beautiful way, and it sounds like an odd form of singing bowls. I think I'll need to listen to this one a couple more times. |
I received these from my mom this morning:
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um Deerhoof - Breakup Song Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights Madlib - Medicine Show #8: Advanced Jazz Miles Davis - Kind of Blue My Bloody Valentine - Loveless Ornette Coleman - The Complete Science Fiction Sessions It feels good to finally have a physical music collection that doesn't consist of only four albums. :D |

Last album I bought was Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds... however, I think the last I listened to was PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love (Now my favourite album from her).
