Les Rallizes Dénudés - Mizutani (1991) Japanese psychedelic/noise rock. Now, I had been lead to believe that I was in store for some mental, spacey, psych jam band stuff. What I got was more mellowed out, slow, at times melodic stuff. That was fine and I quite enjoyed it, but am I misunderstood here or do I just need to go for a different album? Sigh - In Somniphobia (2012) I don't even know how to describe this. I can't. It's like black metal, but via all kinds of stuff from symphonic metal, jazz, classical and prog. Throw in some killer guitar solo's as well. Its a good, crazy avante-garde metal album but I didn't enjoy it as much as the brilliant Imaginary Soniscape. Not that i should expect to, that album is about ten years old. It just happens to be the only other album of theirs I've heard. Storm Corrosion - Storm Corrosion (2012) Collaboration project from Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth and Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. A long time in the works since the two formed a working relationship together. It's different, it's quite stripped down, hardly any drums, and it may not be mind blowing but it's a nice, relaxing record. Jack White - Blunderbuss (2012) It's taken me a while to get around to it. I'm almost finished it (second to last track playing now) and first impressions are....meh. I think it has some nice melodies and maybe it's something I could learn to enjoy more with repeated listens but I'm underwhelmed. I just wasn't feeling it for the most part, some of the lyrics I picked up on seemed kinda stupid and theres just not enough going on there to really carry it for me. |

There were a couple of moments in the record where it kind of snapped me out of a slight distraction and forced me to take notice. I did enjoy it, I just wasn't completely mindblown. It's not really that kind of a record, you know?

I know what you mean. Either way, I am happy to see they got together and made some music, be it very mellow and easy listening. It's a nice break from their typical proggy style though (not including Wilson's solo work), so in a way, it's good for both of them.

Bakermat - Vandaag EP (2012)
A couple nights ago, three good friends and myself got together and made pizzas, drank Christmas beer, and got high. We were an eclectic group; two Germans (one from Hamburg, the other Munich), one Kiwi, and a Californian. We had one thing in mind: listen to good music. So we plugged in to a massive speakerset and took turns DJing from a macbook. After some progressive house, some hip hop, some psychedelic rock (including the entirety of Lonerism), this track was played: It was love at first listen. Give it at least 2 minutes and you'll see what I mean. So of course once I'd sobered up a bit I had to get the source material for myself. It's a tech house masterpiece that, most prominently, features a flute. A happy little flute. The best way to describe this song is infectiously uplifting while paradoxically overwhelmingly soothing. |

Uneven Compromise EP Got this based on a recommendation from Surell. I guess it's an EP. It's one intro track and one 11 minute track that sounds like a series of 5 or so different songs of sweet sometimes experimental, sometimes retro, always grimy-sounding hip hop. Really liking this a lot. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer. |

P.O.S. - We Don't Even Live Here Finally got round to this. Sees pretty decent so far and I am liking the continued/vamped up punk vibe that has always been prevalent in their albums.
