Unfortunately the rest of their discography is far from great. I would give Through the Ashes of Empires a go though to begin with.
Machine Head are not a bad band but their discography as a whole isn't convincing. They either did it right or they didn't. Consistently impressive live band though. The Blackening surprised me. Their stock rose considerably with that one! |

I visit the thrift store in search of dollar records that are in good condition. Today there were a couple.
Every once in a while I enjoy listening to Tapestry, but I only had it on cassette so this was an upgrade. I've never heard Joni Mitchell before but I thought a dollar was worth the risk. |

Various Artist - Girls On 45 (26 Girl Groups, Girlie Pop & Soulful Ladies From 1963 - 1968) this is fucking awesome!....26 remastered tracks from unheard of 60 girl pop groups/singers....i've heard 6 of these tracks before finding this comp....for only 8 bucks this is probably going to be one of my favorite releases for this wonderful and highly ignored genre.....also i've been trying to find a nice ye-ye inspired silhouette design to get tattooed on me.....i'm liking the one on this cover a lot even with all of my excitement about this wonderful new comp....it does not compare to FINALLY someone remastering and re-releasing the first two albums of my beloved Priscilla Paris Priscilla Paris - Love, Priscilla: Her 1960s Solo Recordings i in all honesty cannot think of any other voice in all the music i've ever heard that quite affects me the way the Priscilla Paris's voice does.....and it's been very hard for me to track down decent copies of her 3 solo albums....this is a remastered comp of her first two albums along with 8 previous unreleased tracks!..... the first half is a wonderfully remastered copy of her first album Priscilla Sings Herself originally released in 1967 and consists of all songs penned by Mrs Paris and has some of the most heart breaking lyrics i've ever heard....along with her unique and amazingly voice these tracks reach deep into your soul and torments you with songs of love and despair....with some super groovy musical accompaniment (seriously some of the music for these tracks is so strangely upbeat when compared with the despair of the lyrics) the second half is her sophomore release Priscilla Loves Billy...which is a silly play on Billie....as the album is a tribute/cover album of Priscilla's favorite Billie Holiday songs....i honestly thing few people could ever match Holidays amazing throaty vocals....Priscilla is right on key....while adding her own playfulness she really sticks to the tradition that Miss Holiday brought to music and jazz in particular.....these tracks are as hip as they come....the lyrics are wonderful (DUH! they're fucking Billie Holiday songs!)....the music if flirty, playful and just damn right cool daddy-o.....and Priscilla singing them makes me wish i had a girl to slow dance with all night on an empty low lite dance floor which is covered with balloons |

Seven Steps To The Green Door - The ? Book. Posted this in the Rock forum and it gets posted here because it is one damn good album. I have only heard it digitally but the CD comes in book form with coded pages with a story that connects the album both auditory and literary. It's on my Amazon wish list. Prog Rock minus the noodling that has never really done anything for me. Instead it dips into death growls, male/female vocal harmonies, ambient Sax passages and a nod to it's Retro heritage whilst still sounding fresh enough to garner new listeners. Imagine Opeth meets Porcupine Tree meets Rush and you are sort of halfway there. I am only on first listen with this after hearing a track today and used Shazam to track it down. It's a mis-mash of Heron's usual laid back laconic delivery with an undertow of dark, dub inspired beats and chilled Electronica. Have a track: 2:54 - S.T A sister combo with an album that has a Shoegaze/Ethereal feel but still hold it's focus and doesn't turn into a wispy cloud of nothing. It has bite AND atmosphere. Any band with Dub in their name usually brings me out in hives these days due to the dreaded Dubstep stigma but happily to report that the Dub is exactly that, with a dash of Hip Hop, stilted Electronica and Bass heavy beats. Whilst not in the same area as Dubmatix (one of my favourites) regarding a more dance/groove inspired sound, it is still refreshingly old school in sound but modern in production. So yes we get to hear some Reggae again! Quality stuff.

The debut album from Grand Funk Railroad (one of my all-time favorite rock power trios.)
The debut and only album from Armageddon (featuring Keith Relf of Yardbirds fame, Bobby Caldwell of Captain Beyond, Martin Pugh of Steamhammer, Louis Cennamo of Renaissance & Steamhammer.) The debut and only album from Apple (a psychedelic pop/rock gem from 1968.) The second album from Anthony 'Rebop' Kwaku Bah (probably best known for his work with Traffic and Can.) The debut album from Ahmed Abdul-Malik (double bassist & oud player, noted for integrating Middle Eastern and North African music styles in his jazz music.) |
