Rush - Hold Your Fire, Presto, Test for Echo, Counterparts

A friend of mine who tours in two indie pop bands and plays for various jazz groups here in Louisville gave me some demos for his band, as well as a bunch of other stuff. Here's what I got.

Pat Metheny, Bright Size Life. 70's jazz fusion. Haven't listened to it yet.

Daughn Gibson, All Hell. He used to drum for a stoner metal band. His first solo LP features Gibson crooning in a very James Blake-esque way over gospel music samples to make weird country music. Way, way better than it sounds. I'm really glad my buddy gave this to me, I've been wanting it for awhile.

Chris Potter, Follow The Red Line: Live At The Village Vanguard. More jazz. Haven't listened to anything but the first two songs, but I like Chris Potter so I think I'll like it.

Frankie Rose, Interstellar. I have no idea what this is. Haven't listened to it and don't know the band. Judging from everything else he gave me, it's probably some sort of dreamy indie type band, or jazz fusion.

New Order, Power, Corruption and Lies: Deluxe Edition. He gave this to me because I made a disparaging comment against new wave music, which he loves. I listened to it and enjoyed it, though I don't know if it will convert me to a new wave fan.

Of Montreal, Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? I haven't listened to it (yeah, I know), but everyone here knows what it is so I won't bother with a description.

Panda Bear, Person Pitch. Haven't listened to it yet. Solo album, from Panda Bear, one of the members of Animal Collective. I'm not really a big fan of Animal Collective so I'm not sure how much I'll like this album.

Real Estate, Days. Dreamy surf rock. Pretty typical indie stuff, but still very well done and very enjoyable.

The War On Drugs, Future Weather and Slave Ambient: Deluxe Edition. Experimental pop music, shoegaze, and alt country. All good. One or both of these albums will probably show up in Albums You're Digging.

Ihshan - Eremita (2012)

Very much in vain of his 2010 album After, and that one was really a love it or hate it album. Personally I always like it when someone tries to incorporate horns into metal, and while there's more just basic metal sounds, this does have some blaring jazzy horns to it.

Based on some recommendations from Goofle:

Billy Woods—History Will Absolve Me
This was a really good call, I'm really enjoying this one, especially the sound-collage-esque approach to the music. The way the tracks are built is sort of reminiscent of El-P, though with more raw and brittle production. Favorite song so far is probably "Bill Cosby".

Danny Brown—XXX
I haven't totally made up my mind on this one yet. The production verges on the squeaky clean, ziploc 'n tupperware style that so much current hip hop annoys me with, but at the same time I do feel like there's a little more to this album than the usual. And I like the song "Pac Blood" a lot.

The copy I found is missing the last three tracks for some reason. If anyone could help me out there I'd be much obliged. :)

Quakers—s/t
I haven't made up my mind on this one either. It seems pretty good but it's just so much to digest. I guess time will tell how many times I listen to it.

I felt the same way about that Quakers album, and really any album that has over 20 tracks with an average length of 2 1/2 minutes.

Goofle 07-23-2012 09:04 PM

Yeah, listened to it again recently. It's okay, but I do prefer the other two by far. My thing with Danny Brown is that he takes the greatest and worst excesses in Hip Hop music and combines them with a unique charm and sense of humor that just hits the right buttons with me. I just love listening to it all the way through.

I found Hold Your Fire a pretty good album. An underrated one.

Nice.
