7 Horns 7 Eyes - Throes of Absolution (2012)

Don't let the stupid metalcore sounding name turn you away, this is some pretty decent technical death metal that really does sound like something unique unto itself. Far better than the stuff that's been coming out of France (but isn't that always the case?) like Gorod and Outcast.



The Great Old Ones - Al Azif (2012)

Yet another one of the emerging "blackgaze" bands to come out of France but to help them stand out they chose incorporate Lovecraftian themes into their lyrics. The vocals are at the bottom end of the production so they're completely blured and they could be singing about the Care Bears for all I know. Only other thing to say is that it's not quite as ashamed of its black metal roots like Alcest so it sounds far more like a directionless black metal album would.



Dark Forest - Land of the Evening Star (2012)

Black metal band out of Calgary of all places. I checked out their 2006 album, Aurora Borealis, a few years ago and was pretty impressed by what I heard. The band really does remind me of Agalloch, but more in their inspiration and ambition than in their actual sound. Haven't listened to this one yet but I'm expecting it to be good.

Best Coast - The Only Place


So far it's ok. It just feels so safe...they kind of changed to an alt-country direction on this album. There's sparkly, high quality production and Consentino sounds very Neko Case/Zooey Deschanelish on this album. It's not a bad thing, since I like Neko Case and She & Him, but Best Coast was at their best when they did fun, lo-fi, upbeat pop songs. I miss the Best Coast from their EP's and Crazy For You. I hope they bring it back soon, because it just isn't the same anymore, and it's a shame because they were one of my favorites.

OFF! - OFF!

do you like really fast short punk rock songs?.....did you like the first OFF! album?.....this is an exact replica of that....which makes this album 5 stars....16 songs in less than 16 minutes....all short and to the point.....you could literally put the two albums together and not even this they were different....which is good i mean they were prefect before and why would they change at all.....kind of weird though in 1980 Black Flag wrote a song called "You Bet We've Got Something Personal Against You!" it was directed at Keith Morris for stealing the song "I Don't Care" for his new band Circle Jerks.....32 years later it seems Keith has responded to that song with the OFF! song "I Got News For You",....talk about holding a grudge in!

I personally prefer Teen Dream after listening to both several times of the past weeks and months, but this album is still right up there with the best this year has to offer. I would certainly put it as my top "non hop-hop" release of 2012.
