Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory (2012)

It's definitely an improvement on their lackluster 2011 self-titled release, which I honestly can't remember anything from it. Attack On Memory is kind of like a grab bag of sounds, with no song really sounding much like the last, which is both a good and bad thing. On the one hand if you're not a fan of this particular style on the song you're currently listening to, stick around for 2-3 minutes and it will most definitely change. I mean there's indie rock, post-hardcore, post-punk revival, and punk rock on here. Yet the lack of coherence makes it sound like I'm not listening to an album but a "Best Of" from a much older band trying desperately to keep up with the times. Still to their favour, Cloud Nothings have released a catchy rock album with a couple of really solid songs ("Wasted Days" in particular) and an album I will definitely revisit in the ensuing year.

Indeed! I'm surprised with how much I like it. I was just expecting "good".

The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence (2011)

Interesting take on R&B that tries to push the genre towards something new. Abel Tesfaye has a great singing voice and really does Michael Jackson justice on his cover of "Dirty Diana". His songs really capture the truth behind the party scene and how tiring it can get to the point where it's painful, but the exit doesn't seem to exist anymore. Most of the songs deal with relationships and how Abel Tesfaye's relationships have changed since becoming a kind of icon in the public eye. Definitely has me anticipating his full length LP coming out later on this year.
