The Gil Evans Orchestra - Out Of the Cool

I've been a fan of the odd tune I've heard over the last 2 or 3 years, only just got round to grabbing an album with this guy's name on it.

I'm a lazy bastard like that.

That album's just great. Try listening to Giant Sand if you end up liking these guys.

Try listening to everything else by Calexico
But The Black Light is definitely one of the best things they've ever done.

You thought 80 pounds was depressing? I just spent about 250 euro's.
I was in my music store today and they keep a lot of things behind the counter for me. The pile of records was getting bigger and bigger and, quite frankly, I wanted to get rid of it. So...

(clickable!)

Left to right, top to bottom:
CD's: Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun / Acid Dreams Epitaph / Kyuss - And the circus leaves town / Burton, Corea, Metheny, Haynes, Holland - Like Minds

Strummin' Mental 5 / Can Soundtracks / Radio Moscow - The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz / Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints

Sun Dial - Other Way Out / / Strummin' Mental 1 / The Bevis Frond - The Leaving of London.

There's no crime in the odd "Best of..." collection, especially when the artist is best known for the arrangements he's done for other great performers, my favorite being Miles Davis Orchestra's Miles Ahead album:

He did an album with Miles? I'm as there as there can get.

I love the odd bits I've heard from Gil, so I may well try and track down a good best of or two...

He actually did five: Porgy & Bess, Birth of the Cool, Sketches of Spain, Miles Ahead, and Quiet Nights. His collaborations with Miles are what he's best known for.

Yeah, I've got Birth Of the Cool and Sketches Of Spain. Didn't know Gil Evans was on those but, then again, jazz history is far from an area of expertise for me. I knew Evans primarily through his work on the Absolute Beginners soundtrack before, I'll hunt down those other Miles albums in the fairly near future as well.

I still prefer Insurgentes but this was a solid release. I took about 5 songs away from it as especially good.
