Yea, I actually just downloaded that album a few days ago, too. I thought it was just okay, but many other people would disagree. |

Found these two on CD dirt cheap
Red House Painters - Old Ramon (2001) Their final album, originally recorded 1997-1998 but not released until 2001. This album has a nice mixture between the more upbeat electric guitar-based sound of Song For A Blue Guitar and the introspective acoustic guitar heavy sound of their earlier material. Some great songs on this album but does tend to drag a bit towards the end. Enjoyable stuff though. Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind (1996) Got this for only 3 euro, a bargain indeed considering it's a sprawling double album. There's a lot of variety an this album ranging from post-rock epics, harrowing acoustic numbers, experimental field recordings, live tracks, electronic tracks and their usual grinding noise-rock. It's more of a collection of old recordings but a great job was done in piecing it all together into a solid album.

I can't find any sources to confirm that but that does sound quite interesting. But yeah the album does sum up post-rock in a way, although I highly doubt Michael Gira would see it like that. It is a great example of using rock instrumentation to do something completely different and unconventional and that just about sums it up for me. But then again they've pretty much been doing that throughout their career only harsher and uglier at the beginning, then becoming more ambient as their career went on but still as uncompromising.

I can't really find Swans enjoyable for that reason. It just seems that they've removed all the fun from rock whilst still using rock instrumentation. I've listened to Swans, Sigur Ros and Mogwai and all of them seem to be too bland to interest me but to harsh for me to find them beautiful. Mind you, I don't really like anything that starts with "post-".

I could never really get into Mogwai but Sigur Ros are great, they create really beautiful, cinematic music and I wouldn't really call them harsh in anyway. Their albums can be a bit overlong and ponderous but when you're in the right mood for them they hit the spot very nicely.
Swans certainly didn't set out to create fun music. Their music is as bleak as you can get really and a lot of people find solace in that. They do have plenty of beauty in their music though, especially on their Jarboe-fronted songs, and it counter-balances their ugly harshness somewhat.
